Why does this happen? I’ve always wanted to know but forget to ask.

Presumably various mechanical issues, including fuel leaking into places it shouldn’t, or short circuiting electrical systems, etc.

Passats have a reputation for being calamities around 100K miles. Mine had a flaw that led to rapid tire wear, frequent break jobs, wheel work, etc. so I traded it in well before the anticipated armageddon.

          That’s a Corolla.

I can’t tell if you’re joking. The car that is on fire is a Passat. A Corolla is parked on the other side of the street.

Yep those were great cars when they first came out, but there are good reasons why you see so few on the road these days. Salvage yards are stacked with them.
