I was standing right there last night outside of Convivial. Heard the shots and saw two groups of teenagers (always teenagers) running in opposite directions down the street.

Same shit, same street, same alley, different day.

      Ditto. Enough!

Yup. Something was going on all night leading up to the shooting last night. There were a lot of police around that block before the shooting even happened. Not sure if they knew something was up?

That block has been getting active again. The police camera came down the end of the summer so the groups have been trickling back in. It’s easy to see who is out there selling drugs and causing the problems. Check the guy in the wheelchair… I’ve seen non-regulars from the block straggling in and buying drugs out in the open.

It’s an annual cycle. Once it gets a little colder things will tapper off and then someone will get shot or stabbed again in the spring.

that block on o st. between 6th & 7th has had a number of serious incidents over the last couple of years (I used to live in the Washington Apts. that you see past the cops). i feel confident in saying that most people in the general vicinity (let’s call it 3rd-7th streets, m st up to rhode island) can speak to a number of times where they’ve heard gunshots.

the cop car lights in the picture block the memorial dedicated to the woman who was shot and killed two Labor Days ago (i think that was the right weekend). that incident was bad enough that there were spot lights installed on the block, but as soon as the cops removed those, things have started to get a bit dodgy again as Jay points out. that is really unfortunate, because what you don’t see if the rec center where tons of kids are playing/hanging out daily.

Jay also is right in that it’ll slow down as it gets colder… but between the moment it gets warm enough until about Thanksgiving, people are outside on the street drinking and smoking. my girlfriend stopped visiting me after an empty 40oz was thrown at us walking home at like 8:30 on a weekday. that was after i tried for months to convince her that the neighborhood wasn’t too bad.

the craziest thing that happened on that block was when the ATV gang took it over and had a little drag race extravaganza. one of the wildest things i’ve ever seen. popping wheelies with girls on the back, so aggressively that their hair was dragging on the concrete. to this day i’m surprised that i did not witness a serious injury. the whole thing went on for well over an hour. cops were in the area, but did not intervene (anyone that has read other posts about the ATV gang know the deal).

i hope for my friends that live in that area that things improve.

Yes. I have been walking to Giant and seen people pull guns out of their waistbands directly in front of me on a Sunday afternoon.

I avoid walking down O Street anymore. The safest block to walk down is M in front of United House of Prayer. Frustrating that you have to go blocks out of your way to avoid guns or bottles being thrown at you in the middle of the day.

The violence is many targeted at the groups that hangout of that block though. And it’s been going on for years and years. It’s sad. I’ve tried to go to community meetings over the years to do something about the problems on that block but nothing changes. It’s frustrating. The only useful solution I have found is to avoid that block…

If you want out in the open drug sales, go around the corner by 7th & Q. One or two guys are in front of the shuttered tax office every day and people just stroll up or even double park & buy – all hours of the day!

Does this explain the helicopter and spotlight that was flying low over Shaw/LeDroit park last night around 9?

I used to live in the Washington Apartments as well in the building overlooking that block. As long as it was above 40 degrees people were always outside yelling. The last time I drove by the block it looked like someone was choking someone. When I lived there, I didn’t invite my parents over and my friends refused to come over. The first couple of weeks was dodgy but once they knew you lived there they wouldn’t mess with you. Having to walk through all that mess made me very aware of my surroundings. I had hoped when the Giant opened that things would improve. In my opinion those apartments need to be bulldozed. It should be redeveloped or turned into affordable housing for teachers, firefighters, etc. I even walked out one Thanksgiving morning to several guys having their Thanksgiving dinner on the hood of my car. I was shocked and didn’t know how to respond. Ended up scratching the freshly painted hood of my car with their pans with grease running all down and there was nothing I could do.
