“Dear PoPville,

Do you have any idea what is going on on Piney Branch Parkway between Arkansas and Beach Drive? A construction crew has set up camp.”

I believe this is a staging area for the massive Beach Drive Rehabilitation project.

The National Park Service reports:

“On or about September 19, 2016, Beach Drive will be closed in both directions from Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway NW to Tilden St NW.”

The lack of coordination between DOI and WMATA is astounding. Safetrack surge #10 will be shutting down the red line b/w fort totten and noma and individuals will not be able to use beach drive. 16th street is going to be quite the parking lot.

    • jumpingjack

Totally agree. October (or November, or whenever Surge #10 will be) is going to be horrendous.

      • Rich

Why would something in NE be affected by this?

  • I think they will have to close Piney Branch, unless they are planning to detour westbound traffic through MtP. What a cluster.

    • Epic Fail

Just to be clear, Segment 1 of the project (the part of Beach Drive from Rock Creek Parkway north to Tilden) will be divided into 2 Segments. Segment A will not require that Piney Branch be closed, so traffic will still be able to head east/west across the Piney Branch Tilden connection. However Segment B will require the closure of Piney Branch and traffic will be diverted through Mt Pleasant. The question is how long will Segment 1A take as opposed to Segment 1B? At the moment we don’t know.

You mean traffic has been this bad and this hasn’t closed yet? I thought this had started post-labor day. Yikes!

    • AnonJohn

It was scheduled to start after labor day. That slipped to “on or about 9/19”. Don’t you love it? Behind schedule before it started! :)

  • Curious

When are they going to fix Piney Branch itself? It is a potholed mess.

    • AnonJohn

Amen to that. It’s on the list. They’ll also add a bike path next to Piney Branch. But I’m quite unclear as to what phase of the project this belongs. It’s truly awful. I hope they fix the drainage issue that underpins about half the potholes.

It’s worse than most of Rock Creek Pkwy

Between all the road construction & metro shut downs I think we all need to stay at home! Going to be a nightmare year.

    • Rightsman

      Nightmare THREE, not one, year!

  • ClePark

There is currently a no left turn sign from Tilden onto NB Beach Drive during morning rush. Since they are detouring cars down Tilden I assume that will be removed? I still suspect a myriad of honks.

  • Jerry Grundle

This is going to cause some epic traffic nightmares, like during rush hour when all four lanes of northbound rush hour traffic gets funneled up Shoreham Drive onto Calvert Street. It might back up all the way to the Watergate. And I’m also surprised they’re not working on Piney Branch between Beach and Arkansas. That segment is in even worse shape than Beach Drive.

    • dunning-kruger

My guess is that if they are staging from Piney Branch Pkwy they’ll do a quick patch so it can survive the trucks and then fully repave once all the work is done. By the time all this work is done a repave will be unavoidable, it got the way it is without heavy trucks, it won’t take long for them to grind it to bits.

The plan to take THREE YEARS to complete this project is classic NPS. No respect for DC; no real plan to compensate for the total overload to be felt by local roads; nothing! S—- you, DC. Where’s the outrage? And where are the good community organizers when we need them.
