I watched Purple Rain all through college…I was more hurt when Michael Jackson died..but nonetheless Prince will be missed.

I’m wearing purple all next week to work..like everyday.

    Nothing else matters today.

Unbelievable. I got a text about it while teaching 5th grade and gasped so loud and started tearing up- a kid asked what was wrong, I said Prince died, he asked Prince of where? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • textdoc

I was reading something on Facebook the other day about Prince being a badass because he’d been hospitalized and had then gone on to host a party (or something along those lines), and as a result I had “Erotic City” in my head for much of yesterday/this morning.
A talented artist, gone too soon.

  • jcm

That’s a shame. He was an astonishingly talented man. Guess I know what I’ll be listening to for the rest of the day.

    2016 is fucked up.

    • CVR

      This is beyond true

  • OP Anon

So gutted that I missed out on seeing him last year when he played DC and Baltimore. Tickets sold out with a quickness. This is one of my big “Should Have Gone to the Concert!!!” life regrets. I never got the chance :(

  • Anon

While he may have gone sooner than most, he certainly lived more in his shortened lifetime than most of us combined. Rest in Purple, Prince!

    2016 is effed up.

The wrestler Chyna also died. Bad day for mononyms. I hope someone is looking out for Cher. And Sting. And Bono. Actually, just Cher and Bono.

      And Madonna

My heart breaks today. With Whitney, MJ and now Prince gone my childhood music idols are all gone.

So glad I got to see Prince perform in 2012. He played for 3 hours straight then left (stadium was emptying out and lights on). Fifteen minutes later he was back and played for another HOUR. Incredible.

  • I didn’t realize he had ever changed his name back from that symbol thing, but apparently it happened quite a long time ago. I wasn’t really a fan, but like David Bowie I can understand his appeal to some (many). His creativity surely contributed to many other great artists I probably do enjoy.

Same here. I’m also distressed that he was 57 – it makes sense logically, but damn . . . I’m old.

      • Philippe Lecheval

But it really doesn’t make sense, because he was known as a pretty serious health nut. It just seems strange, when people like Keith Richards will outlive us all.

  • This is confusing when the guy who runs this site is also referred to as the Prince!!!
So, this took me a minute.

Jeslett, while there is a Prince of Popville , a Prince of Wales and a host of other “Prince of _____”, there is only and will ever only be just one “Prince.”

      • Yeah, no kidding, but how often do celebrity deaths merit a PoPville post? And I figured it out with a few seconds, but I was taken aback at first.

  • anonymouse_dianne

When I was married in the ’80’s my step daughter had an incredible crush on Prince. I might otherwise have missed out on this genius. I think we should party like its 1999!

  • Vered

Gifted, gifted man. We’ve lost an iconic artist.
