“Anyone Have Info on Shots Fired Last Night in Eckington?”

“Dear PoPville,

Does anyone have information on the shots fired incident that happened around 1am last night in the alley behind 3rd NE, between T and U? Two shots woke me up, and another seven or so followed. I called 911, and four squad cars came out for about two hours. I didn’t go out to speak with them at the time, but have been trying to follow-up today. Keep getting transferred and leaving messages. I’m wondering if anyone was hurt (hoping not; there wasn’t an ambulance), if they found casings (would like to know just how close this happened to my building–the shots seemed about 30 yards away), and if they have any suspects.”

At 8:30 this morning there was no sign of police or a prior investigation from the night before (although they may have wrapped up their work by the morning). Hopefully the lack of police tape and lingering detectives means no one was hurt. This is what, the 3rd or 4th shooting on this block in the last year? They all seem to be centered between V and T St along 3rd NE. Eckington is generally so quite, I wish these clowns would piss off.

Investigation, lol. You can barely get them out of their cruisers for gunshots in Eckington.

I actually saw them out of their cruisers walking on foot with flashlights. Your cynicism is greatly appreciated, tho.

Anytime the police respond to anything in the area of Eckington I live in, they are on bike and/or out of their cruisers in force.

I know its popular to act like a.) your neighborhood is so edgy even the police dont want to be there, or b.) find a neighborhood you think is worse than yours and act like the police dont want to be there… but, its just not been my experience. In fact, MPD does a really good job, in my opinion, wherever there are calls to be out and visible

You might try joining your area MPD Yahoo Group and asking them. There is one for each District. In the Fourth District Commander Manlapaz, who runs 4D, regularly replies to requests like this one when he can share the information. You can find a list of each District’s Yahoo Group here: http://mpdc.dc.gov/node/211702

Should this say that shots were fired in ‘historic’ Eckington? Just sayin’…

Thanks for posting! I live on 3rd and my room faces this alley, and these woke me up. I knew they were super close because I could hear the echo coming off the buildings in the alley. Definitely eager for more details.

Hmmm. I heard those same sounds all the way up in Edgewood….two single pops, then a steady series of them. They didn’t sound all that close to me (I’m just off Franklin), but I would’ve never guessed they were that far south.

    • smh

it’s not impossible that there was a shooting in Eckington and in your neck of the woods on the same evening, even around the same time.

If you’re referring to the ones I heard in Edgewood last night, they were much earlier. 9:30-10 pm.

We heard those too (we are on 2nd at Todd Pl. and bedroom faces the alley). At first I thought/hoped it was an errant nail gun in one of the two buildings going up on 3rd St. We saw a police chopper go by with a spotlight maybe 10 minutes later but otherwise saw/heard no activity on our block.

  • From MPD:

“On April 26, 2016 at approximately 12:49 a.m., PSA 502 Officers heard the sounds of gun shots coming from the Rhode Island Avenue Area. Concerned citizens called reporting hearing gun shots in the area of 1900 Block of 3Rd Street, Northeast. Units canvassed the area and located numerous shell casing. No additional information at this time.

We live on 3rd Street NE and heard the shots and saw two men fleeing the scene. I spoke to a cop who told me “somebody got shot.”
