Anthony sends on Saturday from the CityVista sweetgreen on 5th Street: “thanks for the roach in my salad. DO NOT get the Spicy Sabzi”.

It can happen anywhere but God Damn that’s an upsetting photo…

But to sweetgreen’s credit they did reply to OP:

“hey anthony, this is not cool and we’re so sorry…we’re going to make this right.”

Now *this* is something where the photo should be posted after the jump! I would have been quite happy not to see this right after eating lunch!

  • spookiness

A few of us olds remember a place called the Insect Club. Maybe somebody at sweetgreen found a recipe from the archives?

I’ll be cowering under my desk until I get the “all clear.”

  • anonymous

Yikes! Guess I’ll go to Chopt until there’s an “all clear”. This is definitely one of those You know it’s there—-but it’s ok because you don’t see it. I don’t think I’d be able to order from there and NOT think about this image. :/

    • What kind of all clear are you expecting? I’ve eaten at sweetgreen dozens of times and not gotten roaches. There’s no way to 100% guarantee this won’t happen here or other places with mass prepared food like this.

Wow, I never made an issue out of it because I took my salad to go and was home before I discovered it. But two years ago, I got a salad from the exact same SweetGreen at City Vista, and found a huge dead horsefly in my salad!
Needless to say, I tossed it out.
I think we all understand that things like this can happen anywhere in a big city, but now I am beginning to wonder.

The Rad Thai I had for lunch isn’t sitting so well right now…At least it was from another location.

  • Rich

Aren’t they supposed to be fresh and local or perhaps, fresh and organic. A roach probably qualifies.

    • LedroitTigah

he he. My mom always used to point out that swallowing bugs was just, “more protein”!

  • kd21

This happened to a coworker at a different Sweetgreen a few months back. The manager gave him $5 store credit – that’s barely half a salad! I hope Anthony is getting a better deal than that.

  • I totally would not have looked so closely and just eaten it. Ew ew ew

  • Ally

Generally protein added to a salad costs extra…so, technically, he got a bargain here. Sorry. Couldn’t help myself.

  • lizcolleena

Ugh that’s so gross. I know it happens, but I don’t want to think about it ever. My former boss found a roach in the bottom of her soup from Brown Bag on 18th once. Can’t bring myself to eat there, even a different location.

You can have organic, or you can have a no-bug guarantee. Can’t really have both. Especially not with kale and broccoli and other plants with hidden places no amount of mechanical washing will totally flush out.
Also: You can have organic, or you can have yield-increasing price-decreasing chemical fertilizers… but not both. So quit complaining about the price of your organic produce while we’re on the subject.

It looks like OP got a moth, not a cockroach. (And interesting follow-up question: Does it really matter?)

  • Hill Denizen

Awwwww maaaaan, and Spicy Sabzi is my favorite! That said, I would hope they get checked out thoroughly to make sure this is a one-off. I would hate to judge a place for something beyond their control.

  • MarkQ

    Mmmmm… protein toppings.

What’s worse than having a roach in your salad?

Having an half-eaten roach in your salad.

A few months ago, I also found a bug (small striped in the shape of a stink bug) in my Earth Bowl from the Navy Yard Sweetgreen. I contacted Sweetgreen and they offered a free salad with no comment on how they would prevent bugs in future salads. They didn’t even say that they would contact that location to have them wash the veggies that go into the Earth Bowl. Sweetgreen was one of my most frequented places to eat, now I haven’t been back since.

This happened to my friend (i was there, eating with her) in the House cafeteria. The guy offered to let her go back to the salad bar and make a new one, on the house. Um, no thanks.

  • V

I actually wouldn’t freak out that much. it looks like a bug people might eat in other parts of the world… I freak out over a lot, but i MIGHT just toss this out and keep it moving… get my money back for sure, but… It’s not the worst i’ve ever seen.

    • V

whooooops… didn’t read the roach part. scratch out everything i just said
