“Dear PoPville,

All this nice weather has me thinking about the summer pool season. I know there were rumors that the East Potomac (Hains Point) pool would be closed for a lengthy period of time for repairs. Any update on whether that’s happening? I’d hate to be without that pool all summer!”

DPR tells me the good news:

the pool will be open this summer.”

Ed. Note: T minus (around) two months till outdoor pools open!

Best news of the week! I’d love to see the city build a new 50m outdoor pool elsewhere in the city, maybe up north, so that when the EPP repairs inevitably need to be done, lap swimmers will have another option. I know it’s a pipe dream, but DC and other cities actually used to set aside land and build substantial “quality of life” assets just for the benefit of health of taxpayers (parks, pools, tennis courts, ball fields, etc.). And thank goodness for our forefathers and mothers as it seems that now we new for-profit restaurant openings, as wonderful as they are, as these types of community benefits.

Wilson HS and Anacostia Park both have 50 m lap lanes

So…DPR’s wording does not mean it won’t be closed for at least part of the summer for lengthy repairs still. It could still be closed all of June and July, and DPR’s statement would still be accurate–it still *would* be open this summer…just not the whole summer.

I think their statement in no way should be taken as a guarantee that East Potomac Pool will be open the entire season.

Talk about reading into things. The reason people thought it may not be open is because a renovation was being planned and was expected to be closed for2+ years. So not sure why it would be closed for 1-2 months and then re-open. Anything they were planning to do was major – not a new paint job.
