“Dear PoPville,

My boyfriend’s parents are visiting this weekend. On Saturday, my boyfriend is taking his dad to see the Tedeschi Trucks at Warner after we have dinner at the Hamilton, but then I’ll be left to entertain his mom for a couple of hours. She is lovely, don’t get me wrong!, but I’m drawing a blank for something appropriate to do. I’m open to uber-ing to another part of the city for a drink and/or desert somewhere relatively quiet – just not sure where! I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions on places/activities?”

I have three words “Giant luminescent rabbits”.

  • MCR

How late are we talking? You could try to get one of the later appointments at Nail Saloon – I think they are open till 9.

  • Jessica

Coco Sala is a nice place to go for a drink and dessert. Or maybe somewhere at City Center.

    • SparklyKittyTacos

+1, I was going to suggest Coco Sala as well.

  • sproc

Is she a book person? You can kill time at Politics and Prose or Kramerbooks and get coffee and dessert as well.

    • Bob

I think they are renovating the coffee shop right now. I would check first.

  • ANC

Drinks/dessert at O st. Mansion is a sure-fire pleaser, as long as you’re allowed to go explore afterwards.

    • timmyp2353

      +1. Super underrated.

  • ZetteZelle

Politics & Prose is open til 10 pm–I’d take her there, perhaps with a stop for dessert first.

  • madmonk28

Hot chocolate and dessert at Oyamel? Might be too loud/crowded though.

The Oscar Nominated Animated/Live Shorts are showing at the E Street Cinema

    • saf

The live action ones are particularly bleak this year.

    • textdoc

Oooh — thanks for this reminder!

    • kl00t

Related: they’re screening many of the documentaries and all of the shorts for free at the National Archives – too early for the OP, but the shorts will be playing Saturday, live action at noon, animated at 3:30, then the doc shorts on Sunday at 11am.

  • I took my MIL to one of those wine/painting classes. It was a couple hours, interactive, but not complete talking for 2 hours straight. Then we had fun paintings to take home and show off (they were both terrible).

As a 50-year old person, can I humbly suggest that older people don’t necessarily need to be coddled into “quiet” places? Everyone is different, but most of my (similar aged) friends grew up drinking in loud punk bars. She might surprise you…

    • prgkmr

nah, you oldies aren’t comfortable outside of bookstore with a cozy bay window and a cup of nice warm tea.

  • eggs

Possibly a comedy show? It’ll keep you from having to carry a full on conversation for hours while still providing entertainment. This is what I plan to do when I have to entertain my in-laws in a couple weeks on my own one evening!

  • jcm

You could go see Othello at the Shakespeare Theater. It’s just a few blocks away.

    night tour of the monuments!

    • saf

An evening walk through the FDR memorial is always lovely.

      Weather permitting, of course.

  • 20th street

Still time to terminate the relationship.

    • prgkmr

True, when faced with challenges, always best to just call the whole thing off.

  • Philippe Lecheval

Is the monster truck show sold out? Or are you two just not into that type of thing? Sounds like fun to me!

    • textdoc

      It’s a band, not a truck show.

      • Philippe Lecheval

And probably not nearly as cool as a truck show. Bummer.

        • I Dont Get It

          Equal in noise though.

  • anon

Why don’t you ask her what she’d like to do?

    • I Dont Get It

The answer will be “Whatever you want to do is fine with me.”

      • textdoc

        LOL! That’s a good ppint.

        • Anonoline

Maybe ask the boyfriend what she likes to do. He should at least have a general idea.

  • General Grant Circle

DC Improv (comedy) and the Warner Theater are nearby for shows. Poste if it is a nice night out for drinks.

    • Jakendc

      Poste has closed

      • Anon

Posto has closed, Poste, has not.

If I ever have to entertain parents on a Saturday night i’d take them to the piano bar at Banana Cafe. The backup plan (because Banana varies between riotously fun or dead depending on the night) would be Mr. Henry’s which has jazz upstairs.

    • saf

The jazz at Henry’s is quite good.

  • MRD

See if you can get in for drinks/dessert at the Tabard Inn. Or even try for dinner if you’re up for it – the food is fantastic.

    • saf

Have you been lately? I’ve heard mixed things recently.

  • Anon

If the timing works out, you might consider a performance by the comedy troupe, the Capital Steps.
