1301 U Street, NW

Thanks to a tipster for sending word that Upper Crust Pizzeria is coming to 1301 U Street, NW in the former U Sushi space which moved inside neighboring Sala Thai back in July. Upper Crust Pizzeria briefly had a downtown location but closed after a year due to some bankruptcy issues. Apparently that’s been worked out – their website says:

“Since its inception in 2001, The Upper Crust Pizzeria has been serving award-winning pizza to Boston-area residents craving something delicious and extraordinary. In January 2013, new owners and management expanded upon the original concept: use fresh ingredients in traditional and unexpected ways on top of a flavorful crust. The menu has grown from classic combos to more unique and daring pairings, including pizzas like The Uncommon, The Fenway, Cameron’s BBQ and more. Any pizza can be made white (without tomato sauce) or red (without cheese) and is available on our traditional, whole wheat or gluten-free crust.

From our original storefront on Beacon Hill’s historic Charles Street, to any of our other metro area and suburban locations, customers can grab takeout, get delivery or choose to dine in. Our award-winning architectural spaces include open kitchens, pizza pan-decorated ceilings and high-definition flat screens, all adding up to deliver a truly unique experience that can only be described as Upper Crust.”

You can see their menu here.

Pizza is my favorite food. I live literally on top of this place. I just endeavored to lose a few lbs. Something has to give.

  • You Street

This is just great, because there’s just nowhere to get pizza in this neighborhood.

    • pizza fan

you’re right, this is great — because there’s still nowhere else to get a regular dam slice of pizza in the neighborhood.

  • anonymouse_dianne

But its Beacon Hill – style Pizza. LOL

  • Whop

Went to school in Mass. Not a huge fan of their pizza but w/ &pizza not delivering….they have a chance I guess

    • anonymouse_dianne

So did I (Clark U). I think it’s a joke. &pizza doesn’t deliver but you are in and out in 5 minutes and you can get all the toppings you want as long as it fits in the oven.

OTOH, it tastes like cardboard with bland sauce and salty toppings.

At least they’re not swagger jacking the name?

  • Anonymrs

Weren’t the owners or managers of this place charged with federal labor violations? I thought that was why the Foggy Bottom shop closed.

  • You Street

I count 13 pizza places in the U street corridor: Alphonse, Italian Kitchen, &pizza, Manny and Olga’s, Jumbo Pizza/Angelico, Matchbox, Ghibellina, Piola, Lupo Verde, Etto, Pizza Boli, Sette Osteria, Blackjack all within a 1 mile radius. That’s just of the top of my head. If you can’t find anything you like at one of these, there are plenty more in DuPont and Columbia Heights. But I’m sure Upper Crust has the one type of pizza that is missing from the neighborhood.

    • U Streeter

These all have pizza as a menu item, but they are not all “pizza places.” E.g., serious stretch to call Lupo Verde a “pizza place.” Most of these are pretty different. I mean, “I’m in the mood for pizza. Gumbo slice, or Ghibellina?” – said no one, ever.
I live right here and I’ve never thought of the area as overrun w pizza. Tacos maybe.
I’ll reserve judgement until I taste the goods.
Gonna have to wake up pretty early to top Pete’s in my book.

      • You Street

A “gumbo” slice sounds most excellent!

        • U Streeter

You’ve gotta admit: no one has ever said that!

      • pizza fan

@U: it’s not worth arguing with someone who considers black jack a pizza place.

        • You Street

Fair enough people, they’re not all “pizza places,” but that’s sort of the point. You can get anything from a greasy pile of bready cheese and pepperoni to locally sourced, free range, shade grown, fair trade, organic, gluten free, vegan, paleo, etc., etc. pizza all within a few blocks. And, by the way, Blackjack has outstanding pizza.

While we’re talking about pizza, I sure would like to see a great pizzeria open in Adams Morgan. Maybe something in the Mintwood/Cashion’s strip, or further east on Columbia.

  • emvee

I work around here and am pretty pumped to get a gf pizza option!

  • Nunahya

Yes!!!!! I lived a few feet away from the UCP in Brookline, MA’s Coolidge Corner and it is delicious!!! Best pizza ever, and I’ve never had another slice that compares. Can’t wait for them to expand all over. Please come to Takoma Park or the Walter Reed redevelopment site, Upper Crust!
