That park at 2nd and Mass Ave NW has been a problem for at least 2 summers at this point. Honestly surprised that it has taken this long for something like this to happen. Maybe now the police will stop cruising by and ignoring the loitering that persists throughout the day and night.

The park at 2nd and Mass NW has been the center of community concern for a while. The fact that a fight there led to a killing may not result in any changes, although changes leading to greater safety in the area would be welcome. Not sure whether the shooting at the 600 block of NY Ave (not very far from the Safeway) was related, but it certainly made for a violent night in the Mt. Vernon Triangle neighborhood, where I reside. DC summers bring more shootings, as I guess the warm weather makes it more comfortable for people to be outdoors courting trouble until the wee hours. Seems sadly predictable. I have no car and use my feet to get me most places, but I avoid walking around my neighborhood at the hours these shootings took place, and I miminize waking alone, especially after dark. But I’d do that in any urban area, whatever the crime statistics.

6th and NY NW is right in front of a police substation!!

Yet how often do you hear Mayor Gray or any of our mayoral candidates (I’m looking at you, Muriel Bowser) address crime in our city? They try to bamboozle the citizens and talk around the issue. It’s time we got tough on crime and we heard a plan from our politicians!

    • Beth

+1. I went to a mayoral debate before the primary and crime/policing didn’t even come up. Shameful.

It’s not easy to jack a car with only one arm.

I hope for the robbers sake it wasn’t a manual transmission.

On an All Hands on Deck weekend? Impossible!

Here’s the body count off the top of my head in the last 24:

1 shot in 3D at Lux
    1 shot in 5D
    2 shot in 7D
    5 shot, 2 dead in 1D (2nd and Mass was a homicide)
Numerous robberies, carjackings, Assaults with Dangerous Weapons, etc.

And yet it’s All Hands on Deck Weekend and most officers are assigned to days and evenings doing pointless fixed patrols and safety compliance checkpoints…..

Sorry I got a dumb question. What does the “D” in “1D” and “5D” shooting mean?

    • anon

district, as in police district. 3D is the Third Police District

      • Sa

        Thanks! I am not a local…

Why are the politicians never questioned about crime in this city? It wasn’t even an issue in the recent primary and I’m sure it won’t be during the lead up to the mayoral elections.

Questioned by whom? As a citizen, you can certainly ask whatever questions and raise whatever issues that you’d like to with the politicians who represent or who would like to represent you. If you have questions and concerns, send an e-mail, make a phone call, go to a meeting, so that the politicians that you are empowered to vote for are aware of and can attempt to address your concerns.

This is only the reported incidents. Early Sun morning around 5am, there was a shootout on my block near 7th & Jefferson St., NW in 4D. Over 20 casings found and multiple cars damaged. Luckily no one was hurt. Since then, we’ve had more loitering than ever. I’ve called MPD and emailed them along with Muriel about these incidents and increasing police presence.
