From a press release:

The 11,800-square-foot Washington Harbour Ice Rink — larger than the rinks at Rockefeller Center in New York City and the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden in Washington — will be ready to welcome its first skaters before Thanksgiving. In addition to offering open skating, discounts to college students and the opportunity to skate with Santa Claus, the rink will accommodate parties and special events, such as birthdays, family gatherings and corporate events.

Hours of operation for the ice rink will be noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; noon to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $9 for adults, or $7 for children, seniors and military. Skate rental is $5 and skating lessons are available. The ice rink will end its season on or around March 1, when the facility will be seasonally converted into a fountain.

  • How will they manage to fill it with water in that spot? (sorry)

There’s a rather large river next to the ice rink, in case you haven’t noticed. I’m not sure how they plan on chilling it since it’s not going to ever be consistently below freezing for a long period of time around here, so they may be using synthetic ice for the surface.

      • Took me way too seriously on that one… The area there is notorious for flooding during the summer. :)

  • Yes! This is great news – hopefully we get a nice snow storm so you can really enjoy this in the proper weather.

I have got to hand it to the Gaylord people, for a giant soul sucking corporation that chopped down bald eagles’ nests and an entire forest to put up a hideous Vegas style eyesore, and is aiming to bankrupt our citzens who have gambling addictions, they sure keep coming up with lots of great ideas and fun events to lure people down there. The Awakening, dock bar, beer festivals, indoor pool, Ice ice baby! What they could really use is a water park.
BTW most outdoor rinks these days have built in chiller systems, they are also making them with slick non-ice surfaces, although it looks like this one will be real ice. Tipping the balance from distain to ok I guess I will take the kids down there this winter….

Oh sheet, wrong harbor. Never mind!!!! Great idea. The land under the GT harbor development was once construction truck parking lot, can you believe that?

I want the awakening back too. :)

      Wrong Harbor.

They tried this same concept 13 years ago in the same exact spot. I know because I was a rink guard there. Nice idea, but the last time they did the rink was poorly managed and the quality of ice was terrible. Needless to say, we played late night pick up hockey and that was a blast.
