Sweetgreen Signage Up at 19th and L St, NW – Asian Bistro Closed

Thanks to a reader for sending the photos of Sweetgreen’s new signage at 19th and L St, NW. They also tell us that Asian Bistro next door has closed:

“Which surprises me since they were always super busy at lunch time. With Maoz closing awhile back (and also always being busy) I question what it takes to stay in business downtown.”

  • glad the asian bistro closed down, the food was gross and service was really slow. plus there are better options around like bibimbap right up the street. glad to see sweetgreen coming in here so I can get my yogurt fix! although I prefer chopt around the corner for salads

I feel like places like Asian Bistro cater to the 9-to-5 crowd. Downtown tends to get rather quiet around 6-7 p.m. and is rather dead on weeknights (not counting the Dupont area here), so I am always amazed when places that aren’t massive chains manage to take in some sort of profit. Does anyone know what the eatery’s hours were?

    • While I loved the Asian bistro for about two years once a week I ate dinner there around 6. In all that time I maybe saw 20 people in the place at dinner. I always wondered why they were even open for dinner

Many lunch places–even chains–take this into account and close for the day at 3 or 4. It’s possible that trying to serve dinner despite lack of demand hastened their closure.

I disagree with Beth, I liked the food at Asian Bistro. Sorry to see them go.

  • Too bad about Asian Bistro. I didn’t do much to keep it open, but it was on my “change of pace and I feel like a walk” list.

I heard Asian Bistro was closed for health violations. Too bad, I liked the food there too.

Damn! I am also sorry to see them go. They had an awesome pork and egg and rice dish I’d have every once in a while. Fuck an overpriced salad.

I’m really gonna miss their “Authentic Asian Cousin”…

(unfortunately not immortalized in your photos above)

Sadness. That seemed like the closest place to grab a decent bowl of Pho, while working in the Foggy Bottom area.
