Judging Restaurants – Pizza No. 17 (reader request)

by Prince Of Petworth April 10, 2012 at 12:00 pm 18 Comments

Pizza no. 17 is located at 1523 17th St, NW in the former Pasha Bistro space in Dupont.

A reader writes:

“Their food is good — really good, even. Their brick oven pumps out awesome crispy/chewy pies, but they also back it up with killer salads and bruschetta. But I expected a lot more in the drink department from a place with an outdoor patio. No beers on tap, only a few bottles (though I didn’t see any local brews), and basically just rail liquor. Service is sub-par, though. Servers don’t seem to know anything about their menu or drinks, and their to-go orders take forever.”

Anyone else check them out yet?

The one time we went, we found the pizza horrible and expensive for what it is (i.e. Pizzeria Paradisio/RedRocks prices, but not in the same ballpark in quality). I much preferred the place when it was Pasha. Service there, and at Java House down the street (same owner), is typically awful. We live nearby and used to frequent both Pasha and Java House, but we got so fed up with the service and management that we stay away, particularly with much better alternatives on 14th street.

Below average pizza. Below average service. Decent place to grab a quick bite and sit outside though.

Been here a couple times and generally enjoy the pizza. Service can be on the slow side however. Last time we were there on a busy night our pizza took forever to come out as they were definitely understaffed. The manager was very apologetic and comped our tab. We will continue to go back and are hopeful they can get some of their service issues straigtened out.

I’ve only eaten here once and the pizza was very underwhelming.

Used to go there a lot when it was Pasha. The crust is good, but they are skimpy with the toppings. I’ve ordered takeout once or twice, but it’s not worth the price. I wish there was a good pizza dilvery to Dupont. Anyone have suggestions?

Try Italian Pizza Kitchen. It’s delicious, and I’m pretty sure the Woodley Park location will deliver to Dupont. Tuscany Cafe in Georgetown is also great and delivers.

Pete’s delivers for delicious but pricier pizza.

        My tastebuds thank you all!

Pricier Yes! After I had my baby, and my mom and sister came down from New York to visit, we ordered pizza, some sandwiches and salads, and the bill came to more than $80 before tipping delivery guy. Food was good but bit of sticker shock on first try.

Last time I was there with a buddy:

Me, sitting down waiting for a menu: “Do you guys have any Pale Ales?”
    Waiter: “Yes.”
Me: “K…what brands do you have?”
Waiter: “I think it’s called India.”
Me: “You mean India brand Pale Ale?”
Waiter: “Yeah – that’s the one.”
Me: “Well, ok. I’ll have an ‘India.'”
    Water: Brings me a Peroni
    Me: “That’s not, um. Thanks.”

Forgettable (even for DC) pizza. Subpar service.

  • Better Choice …

Skip it and go next door to JRs. Better service and drinks.

  • Jeff

    bad service. free backgammon. toss-up

I’m surprised to see so many complaints. I like this place. And yes, I do like Pizzeria Paradiso, I do like 2 Amys, and I still like going here.

  • Loiuse

Bleh- pizza and ingredients of low-quality and more expensive than Paradiso because I can’t share a large pizza with a friend and each must pay for an individual pizza. Sodas in cans/bottles only? Oh Please! I wouldn’t even eat here for free!

  • C

Super underwhelming. I rarely write yelp reviews, but my experience there was so terrible I felt compelled to write one. The pizza is mediocre at best and expensive for the quality. The panini and salads are even worse (very stingy on toppings). I was excited when this place first opened since I live one block away, but I’d rather walk the extra five minutes and go to Pizza Paradiso.

My wife and I call in for delivery here a few times a month. They show up on time w/ the pie hot — that does say a lot. We like the salads there too. Not all their pizza’s are winners, but we found several that we really liked. And on occasions when the order was wrong or missing, they are back in a flash with corrections.
