A reader writes,

“Could something like this be the solution to the issues with dog owners who don’t clean up after their pets? ha”

From Reuters:

A city in northern Taiwan is trying the Midas touch to persuade reluctant residents to clean up after their canines: offering a chance to win gold bars to anyone handing in bags of doggy deposits.

Starting from August 1, dog owners and other residents of New Taipei City, bordering the capital Taipei, can hand in waste to government cleaning teams in exchange for tickets to a lucky draw. The prizes: three gold ingots worth T$60,000 ($2,100), T$18,000 and T$12,000.

I seriously think this would be hugely successful in DC!

The highly anticipated El Centro opened up in early May at 1819 14th St, NW. Their Web site says:

“El Centro D.F.

Chef Richard Sandoval invites you to gather, dine and raise a glass at El Centro, D.F. Authentic Mexican comfort food and fine Tequilas are served in three vibrant spaces

Taqueria
A lively open kitchen is the backdrop for the casual taqueria. Eat-in or take your tacos to-go.

Tequileria
Dine or lounge in the underground Tequileria, where Mixologists craft Latin cocktails and pour from 200 Tequilas & Mezcals.

Rooftop
Salud! Raise a glass at the rooftop’s two open-air bars.”

You can see their menus here. Any fans? In addition to the food – is this a good place to grab a drink?

“Dear PoP,

Any update on the proposed Mellow Mushroom coming to the old 18th and Red location?

Looks as though work has started (the ground floor slab has been excavated for utilities) but from the looks of it there is no way a July opening will happen, I’m thinking early september-ish. Im originally from Atlanta and since reading about it on your site I have been salivating. I need bbq chicken pizza and spinach salad with esperanza dressing.”

I spoke with the owners a couple of weeks ago and they say the opening has been a bit delayed because of the difficulties involved in “getting an old rowhouse in the proper structural shape”. While they hoped to be open in July, I’m now told if all goes well they’ll be shooting for a September opening. I’m guessing late Sept. Of course, I’ll be sure to update as they get closer to opening with an exact date.

Mellow Mushroom will be located at 2436 18th St, NW.

“Dear PoP,

I was hoping you and the PoPville community can help me. I’m a furloughed FAA employee (and a contractor at that, so no chance of back pay), and I could really use some part time work now that it looks like Congress is taking their recess without reauthorizing the FAA. I’ve previously worked in a daycare center, as a barista and as a writing tutor. Anyone looking for a babysitter/freelance writer with way too much free time?”

If interested, please email me and I’ll put you in touch with the OP.

“Dear PoP,

I am currently working on my master’s degree in a non-education related field but I wanted to fill my spare time substituting at DC schools. Do you know any DC substitute teachers? I was doing some research online and the process seems quite convoluted. It looks like since I’m not from DC I will have to get an official FBI criminal background check which, according to the website, could take 18 weeks (Not to mention 18 dollars). The application fee to become a substitute teacher is 30 dollars, 15 dollars to get finger printed, 18 dollars to get a background check, and 20 dollars to acquire official transcripts. In case you’re mental calculator is offline for the day, that’s 83 dollars just to apply for a job! So if anyone out there could offer any advice that would be great! Is it worth going through the process to risk getting one or two assignments a month?”

Anyone have experience with becoming a substitute teacher in DC?

“Dear PoPville,

Several years ago my wife and I rescued two mutts picked up off the streets of Southern Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina. They’re both very good with people, affectionate as all get-out, but they’re aggressive with other dogs. For this reason, we don’t take them to dog parks and are always careful to keep our distance from other dogs when walking ours on city streets.

Last night I took the dogs out for their nightly walk in our U Street neighborhood. As soon as I closed the front gate I saw a gentleman with his dog (which appeared to be some sort of pit bull mix) standing at the corner of 14th and T. I thought the gentleman was simply waiting for the light to change and would keep moving, so I stopped in my tracks and waited. Then I noticed that the gentleman had placed his dog’s leash on the ground and (from what I could gather from a few buildings away) was instructing his dog to sit, stay, and not approach my dogs. At this point I yelled to the gentleman “which direction are you heading?” so I could get out of his way — and right after that his dog darted away from him and ran towards my pair, oblivious to the fact that my dogs were prepared to greet him with open teeth and not open arms. The gentleman ran after his dog while yelling “don’t worry, he’s not aggressive!” to which I responded “no, but mine are!” I followed that up with a shrill — and, frankly, panicked — “your dog belongs on a leash whenever it’s on a city street!” His response: “I’m just trying to train him.”

I managed to keep my dogs at bay just long enough for the gentleman to collect his dog, but barely. Unfortunately, under the circumstances I wasn’t in a position to stick around, apologize for being shrill, and explain why I think his training approach is not only wrong and illegal — it’s dangerous and puts his own dog at risk. I’m assuming the gentleman and I are neighbors, so I’m hoping he sees this, gets my message, accepts my apology, and appreciates the spirit with which I am offering this advice.”

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

Back in early April I shared some reader scuttlebutt that a Piola Pizzeria would be coming to the U Street neighborhood. You can see their Arlington menu here.

There had been little visible progress on the building during the intervening months but I’m happy to finally see some movement. They’ve applied for a liquor license and a Michiel Architecture sign have gone up. The liquor license application says:

“International Italian food chain serving genuine Italian food with a seating capacity of approximately 70 people on the 1st floor and 20 people on the 2nd floor. The total occupancy load is 150. A roof-deck (summer garden) with 40 seats and no entertainment.”

Awesome – another roof deck! More updates as construction progresses.

The reader writes:

“My husband and I bought a house in Edgewood in October, and have planted my first garden there this spring. This was a parking pad when we moved in. Now it is a bounty of tomatoes and cucumbers, bell and jalapeno peppers, basil, thyme, dill, greens and more greens, and soon to be potatoes and pole beans.”

If your garden has been kind to you, send a couple of photos with your neighborhood to princeofpetworth(at)gmail with Fruits (and Vegetables) of Your Labors in the subject line.
