W. Curtis Draper Tobacconist Coming to 15th and G St, NW

W. Curtis Draper Tobacconist was located nearby at 640 14th Street NW. They’re going to be filling a prime retail space by the White House at 15th and G St, NW. It is located right next to the White House gift shop which apparently got an extra awning leading to this humorous sight:

  • T-Bone

I don’t get it. What’s funny about the sign?

Hint: Latter years of the Clinton Administration.

there’s nothing really funny here, unless you have a dirty mind.

      • Rod

Are you a nun or something? It’s really funny! I miss ol’ Bubba.

When I walked by recently, it looks like this place is going in the location where the White House gift shop was, not next to it. I think the gift shop is closed.

it’s not closing, just shrinking. i talked to the guys at draper about this a couple weeks ago. The gift shop is staying but giving up part of the space and draper is going in next to it in the new space. said the space will be nicer than the old one, including a walk-in humidor for customers

Ah, good to know. However I wasn’t surprised when I thought it was closing. I never see many people in there. How does it stay in business? I imagine the rent could be quite high due to its location.

So they’re just moving a block west then?

will they have a smoking lounge? could be a good place to camp out on a rainy day and hope to meet the prez when he gives the wife/secret service the slip and drops in for a secret smoke.

    • Mr. Poon

They allowed smoking in their store for years. Then a few months ago there was a sign in the window that there’d be no more smoking. I don’t know if it’s the landlord or an ordinance or what. I wonder if that factored into their move.

It’s a great cigar store, by the way. I think GT Tobacco is a bit better, mostly for the selection and the walk-in humi, but these guys at Draper are very friendly and I hope they have luck on 15th St.
