Recommendations for cabinet doors and fronts

“We are remodeling the kitchen in our NE DC row house and are wondering if there are any local cabinet makers that PoPville readers would recommend for cabinet doors and drawer fronts. We will be buying IKEA cabinet boxes and want to buy the fronts and doors somewhere else. We’ve heard of online aftermarket front fabricators like Scherr’s and Semihandmade but is there anyone local? Thanks!”

  • I love it when there’s a non-Afternoon Animal Fix thread that’s illustrated with a photo that has pets in it. 🙂

  • Winston and Clementine say cabinet doors should permit easy access to noms.

  • Do not use Cabinet Door World! We did and it was terrible the whole way through – they’re reasonably close (one of the Carolina’s, I think), but way late and poor quality. I wish I had looked at BBB reports.

  • Why don’t you want to use Ikea doors with the Ikea cabinets? They certainly have a great variety. I installed Ikea cabinets in my rental apt. 10 years ago and they still look brand new.

  • I used Scherr with IKEA cabinet boxes and LOVE how it turned out. It definitely takes extra effort and patience..but it’s worth it. I saved about $14k by going this route instead of getting semi-custom cabinetry. You can find pics of my kitchen on my contractor’s website. My kitchen is the dark wood cabinetry with green apples in a container on the counter: http://harmonyremodeling.net/Harmony/Kitchens.html#33.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience with Scherr’s! We are probably going to go with them because their quote came in much lower than others.

  • love the photo!

  • Just another person saying I really like the Ikea cabinets and doors. The worst part about Ikea is that it’s not custom, so you are having to work around your space and their dimensions. The styling though (especially if you do the white ones) is really good, IMO. So you are getting the worst part of Ikea, and foregoing the good part! We got non-Ikea hardware to make them look a little higher end (went with restoration hardware). Just something for you to consider.
