Basque Bar coming to former Horse’s Ass Award Nominee on Florida Ave

300 Florida Ave, NW

Big news from the Bloomingdale Blog spotted in the Bates Area Civic Association Meeting Agenda for April 6, 2015 7:00pm

“Sam and Rachel Fitz, Basque Bar LLC – Restaurant at 300 Florida Ave NW

CityPaper previously reported:

“Beer aficionado Sam Fitz is leaving his position as bar manager of Pizzeria Paradiso over the next month to open his own place with his sister Rachel Fitz. He’s not revealing a lot of the details at this time, but the business will be in D.C. and take inspiration from a cider-focused trip he took to the French and Spanish Basque country last February. He’s registered an LLC for “Basque Bar.

Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan folks may recognize Sam from his time as Beer Director and Cicerone at Meridian Pint and Smoke and Barrel. He also judged 14 beers for us.

Updates when more is known.

  • This is great news. Welcome!

  • This is absolutely wonderful news. I’m looking forward to this building being restored and I’m curious about the bar concept. Welcome to the hood!

  • Meridian Pint and Smoke and Barrel are both awesome, I am pumped to have these guys as new neighbors!

  • Excellent! If they sell patxaran, I’ll be there every day.

  • OMG… i was the one nominating this place for the horse’s ass award. I used to live on this block. This place is a total nightmare and has as colorful a past as 1700 2nd St (which is now new condos). This one building will be the domino that knocks the rest toward development. The busted up shack across the street has been vacant/blighted forEVER… perhaps that slumlord will finally sell too.

    • I would think it’s only a matter of time before the other corner develops, with this going in, DC City Smokehouse coming just down the block, and Meats and Foods apparently going strong.

      • There have been workers inside the commercial building on the same side of Florida, just across 3rd. Fingers crossed!

        • Geez, somehow I forgot that. Yes, I’ve noticed work is being done and that it looks to be cleaning up nicely inside. I haven’t heard anything about it, though.

          • Unfortunately, they’ve been working on that building across 3rd on and off for at least the last two years. There will be a flurry of activity and then nothing for months. It would be great to fill it.

          • as dcbb said, its been on and off work for a long time… likely to avoid the blighted tax. Agree that it will be great to get him out of there so the neighborhood can move on.

Awesome! I love Basque food and there’s really nowhere around here that does it.

    • Basque food is great, but I got excited when I read it’ll be based on a cider themed trip! There’s so few places in this city that sell decent cider.

Sounds like another good reason to hangout in Bloomingdale.

  • Very excited for Sam & Rachel…a hell of a team that I look forward to supporting! Nothing not to like about this, except for Sam being a Ravens fan

  • Huge win for the neighborhood. That building has been derelict for a long, long time. You’re next, B&J’s BBQ!!!

    • For real. This brokedown building, as well as the one directly across 3rd St., can derelict my balls. Cised to finally have some movement in at least one of them.

  • As a resident of the neighborhood, I’m worried about encroachment by commercial businesses. I don’t really want the area to become another Dupont or Logan.

    • Take a look at the DC Zoning Map, nearly all of Florida Avenue is zoned for commercial use. Florida Ave is a major thoroughfare, and I don’t have a problem with commercial uses for commercial spaces.

      • Yes, but converting what was a residential space into commercial is encroachment. It will also bring more traffic and cars to what is actually a fairly quiet nook of the city. (Apart from Florida Avenue itself.)

    • Tsar of Truxton

As a homeowner, that is exactly what you should want. $$$$$

He only said resident, not homeowner. Maybe he’s renting and worried about being priced out. Or, if he’s a homeowner, has no interest in selling anytime soon, and therefore the gain would be relatively irrelevant.

    • NIMBY’s going to NIMBY, I guess.

Finally! A legitimate excuse to wear my txapela in public!

  • GIMME THOSE PINXOS!!!!!! This is the best news since… since… I like this news a lot!!!!

  • Woot! Woot! Excellent news. Welcome to the neighborhood!
