Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

rant: the out of town but in uniform firefighter who was mighty perturbed that i wanted to sit in the metro seat he was using for his bag. get over yourself dude.
rave: the lamb burger at the coupe.
rave: lots of good online sales lately mean i’m expanding my spring/summer wardrobe πŸ™‚
rave: gray didn’t win the primary.

  • Rant: Desean Jackson
    Rave: Desean Jackson

    • Only 16 million guaranteed over 3 years – not bad for a player of his caliber. Let’s hope that Gruden can keep him in line.

    • jim_ed

I know we all have free agent PTSD from our time with Vinny, but by all accounts this is a really good deal, and team friendly. If it were the old days, he would have gotten 6 years and $100 million with $65 mil guaranteed. I’m really bullish on this signing.

  • Rave: DC voters not rewarding ethically challenged politicians.
Rant: Poll workers didn’t know how to turn off electric polling machines? WTH?

  • Rant: This week has been horrible for the 16th street S-Bus Line. More people going into work because its not freezing outside? I cant STAND bus drivers who wait for people who are running to catch the bus. They need to make a law to not allow people to run and be let on the busses, its not fair to those who have been waiting (sometimes up to 10 minutes) and just want to get to work in a timely manner. Drives me nuts. HIMYM Series finale was so cringe worthy i cannot even begin to describe, i guess thats why i havent seen that show since maybe season 2.
Rave: Its starting to get nice out which means i can bike and avoid the headache that is 16th street.

  • Rant: Real estate client got beat out last night by an all cash offer. This market is tough!
Rave: He had the right attitude about it, and is invested in keeping up the search.
Rave: Long run yesterday – it helped to clear my head
Rave: Walked to work this morning – thank goodness spring is here. I think I might have a mild case of SAD.
    Rave: Off this Friday!

    • where is your client looking and what price range? we’re about to put our place on the market so if it’s something they might be interested in we can talk if you’d like.

      • Shaw/Bloomingdale, at least two bedrooms, preferably a row house, under $750K.

        • Good luck! Shaw/Bloomingdale has been off the charts recently.

        • yeah that’s going to be really difficult.

We’ve got a condo in Shaw with parking.

I know how lucky we are, and that we should try to hold it for one more year, but it’s just not going to be easy to keep it (rent it for what we need to rent it for).

        • There’s a house on the unit block of R listed for 790 I think but it’s been on the market for 3 or 4 weeks so maybe they’ll negotiate some.

  • Rant: The election. Not necessarily the result, just the whole process. The turnout was terrible. The timing made no sense (a sitting-duck mayor for nine months?). The rhetoric from candidates was negative. People are/were so condescending toward those who voted differently from themselves, and it is very disheartening to see commenters bash public servants and their fellow citizens. If you dislike a candidate, fine, don’t vote for him/her. There is no need to turn everything into a personal attack.
    The whole thing was uninspiring.
Rave: Lady Terps in the final four!

    • New rant: SCOTUS ruling in McCutcheon v. FEC.

    • I agree with your rant but to balance it out, take cheer in the fact that the political process is always ugly (was in 2010 too) but when it’s over the city is able to move forward. Also, while it seems like we’re ever more divided as a city, studies show that we’re much happier than most of the country and that that happiness cuts across demographics.

    • Rave: Terps in the Final Four!

Rant: People using the qualifier “Lady” for the mascot of a female athletic team. These athletes represent and attend the same school as their male counterparts, so why does there need to be any distinction? This is not a personal attack on anonanoymous, I just like to point this out when I see it to make people think about it. If there is a reason to think that there could be some confusion between the teams (not an issue this season!) then one could say “Terps in the NCAA Women’s Championship Final Four” or some such thing. Ok, off the soapbox now…

      • How is your suggested change different than lady terps in the final four? It is simply attaching the gender id to the event rather than the team. Why is that better?

        • epric002

b/c only women’s teams are called “lady XXX”. men’s teams are just “XXX”, not “gentleman XXX”. but the qualifier for the championship is used for both- “men’s championship final four” or “women’s championship final four”.

        • You yourself point out the difference – attaching the gender to the event, not the team. My point is that a Terp is a Terp regardless of the gender of the team. One would not say “Gentlemen Terps in the Final Four!”

      • Yeah I get that, though I always just liked the sound of “Lady Terps.” Funny enough, I considered saying “Terps in the Women’s Final Four,” but I then I thought, “Why do I need to qualify Final Four?!”

  • Rave: Brianne Won!
Rant: Working out to lose weight is no a crawl. Need to do less HH and more running.

    • I don’t know if you are a dessert or diet soda person, but I’ve given these up for lent with serious results. I’ve still been drinking (maybe even more than usual), exercised moderately, and am somehow managing to lose weight. Now if I could just curb the drinking I might get down to my high school weight.

    • I bought a fitbit – the 50 dollar Zip version – and it’s really helped me! I don’t weight myself because that always backfires for me, but my clothes are fitting better since I’ve started using it. There’s two big things I like about it. First, it encourages me to move more in general because I want to get to that 10,000 step goal. I now get up from my desk every hour and do a lap around my office (which also helps me focus more!). I also like that it makes your calorie budget a moving target – on days when you move more, it gives you more calories to eat. This helps me not feel like I’m starving.

  • Rant: Fell off bike yesterday getting off Rhode Island Ave to the sidewalk. Twas my mistake, but I am done biking on Rhode Island Ave, with potholes and bad drivers.
Rave: Thank you to the Good Samaritan and cyclist who was behind me when I fell, and helped me up. I’m sorry I forgot to ask your name or thank you more properly, but I am really glad there was someone there to help.

    • Forgot to rave about my helmet — you piece of plastic, thank you for making sure my head didn’t split open.

      • Depending on what type of helmet you have, you should look into getting a new one. Bike helmets are designed to be used once, so you could have a small crack in there that you don’t see.

    • I don’t know why people bike on either Rhode Island Ave and especially Florida Ave. Do you have a death wish? Do you want to replace your rims?!? Take a side street, even if it’s slightly less direct.

      • I had already changed my morning commute to use the R Street lane, but I am now boycotting Rhode Island Ave with a vehemence that was previously reserved for places that offer overpriced small plates.

        • colheights67

I’m pretty sick of the tyranny of the small plates, too. (I wonder what will replace my vehement boycott?)

      • gotryit

Why do people drive on Rhode Island Ave? To get somewhere, just like when I bike. For example, if I’m heading up the Metropolitan Branch Trail and want to stop by Home Depot on the way home – it’s the best route, despite large volumes of traffic and potholes.
My bike rims are cheaper than my tires, and I can (occasionally) hop a pothole on my bike.

  • Rant: The supreme court continues to undermine our democracy with its insistence that money is speech. If money is speech than prostitution should be legal. “I wasn’t paying her for sex officer, I was just telling her how much I love her.”

  • Everyone is talking about Catania vs Bowser. Boring. Can’t stand either, really. Dreading hearing them blather for 6 months.

But, let’s talk Catania+Bowser. I mean, their both single, no kids. Now that would be a sitcom worth tuning in to. How I Met Your Father — DC edition.

  • Rave: Brianne beat Graham! I am a proud resident of Ward 1 today.
Rant: Exhausted because I was up so late watching election results come in.
    Rave: Garden planning.

  • Ravant: Like an ex I’d almost gotten over calling from a distant conference saying “why don’t you come out… I’ve got the room through the weekend…you can use my miles. We’ll just talk. You know there was always something there…” the LA gig comes back onto the screen saying that they really like me and we should get together for another round. Like a lovesick sucker, I say “please.”

  • Revel: Little vase of daffodils on my desk
Rant: Kitties nosing, batting, chewing, tipping and generally attacking little vase of daffodils.

    • I haven’t had fresh flowers in seven years for that exact reason, except mine want to go after the water in the vase…and any glass they can find. Nothing is safe.

    • Rant: Daffodils turned out to smell as pungently as paperwhites or lillies – which I can’t stand – so are now banished to the downstairs.

Rave: Kitties have diverted their tormenting to the usual targets.

  • colheights67

    Rave: Brianne won!

I am mostly neutral about Bowser and Catania … My hope is that some amazing candidate decides to start a write-in campaign.

Rant: I went to yoga this morning thinking the class would be taught by my favorite teacher, but instead it was taught by someone I don’t like. Not a great way to start the day/go through yoga class.

  • janie4

Rant – gunshots near my house on Shepherd and New Hampshire twice this week. Helicopter came out for last night. The street’s has been quiet for the past four years (2009 wasn’t perfect). Hope it’s not slipping back to drug/gang territory.
Rave – found a 100-percent cotton maxi dress that’s machine wash on Amazon. Here’s hoping it’s a good shape.

  • Rave/Rant: Went into work late yesterday so I had the pleasure of leisurely getting out of bed, working out, getting dressed and eating breakfast at the table. Wishing every morning could be that for me (which it totally could if I could just get myself out of my wonderful bed by 6 – but that will never happen).
Rave/Rant2: Have had a wonderful past few days what with some old friends in town and making time to hang out with friends I haven’t seen. On the flip side, making that time involved a lot of irresponsibility that I’ll have to make up for at some point.
Rave/Rant3: Still sad but getting better. Resisting the urge to reach out to “catch up.” I think I’m ready but how do you know until you actually see/talk to the person?

  • I had an erotic dream last night about Irving Streete πŸ™‚

    • sure it wasn’t about Irvine Steele?

    • Do you actually know what he looks like?
If not, I’m not sure how one has an erotic dream about a random handle on the Internet.

      • Emmaleigh504

When I dream about people it’s the image I have of them in my head. My brain has made up faces for almost all the regular commenters.

        • gotryit

I think you should share those images. It could be pretty funny and/or insulting, which is kind of par for the comments here.

          • Emmaleigh504

I’m usually way off on age and race. I imagine everyone younger than they are which might be a good thing.

        • binpetworth

Ha ha, me too! I think if I ever make it to a PoP happy hour I am going to be sorely disappointed πŸ™‚

          • Emmaleigh504

lol me too, I also imagine much hotness πŸ˜‰ Popville has the hottest people in DC! (in my head)

        • New life goal: comment enough on here that Emilie conjures up an image of me.

          • Emmaleigh504

I have a picture of you already, it’s a weird cross between GiantSquid and MsNesbett (I’m getting that wrong, but something like that). I hope you are a woman…

        • Emilie504 — I was very charmed when I learned that you’re a librarian, which is what I’d imagined. Kiera Knightly, cashmere sweaters, tights and skirts, with seriously awesome shoes, a delight in both facts and fantasy, and the ability to SHUSH people with professionalism and aplomb. Plus the rhinos. Did I get any of it right? Besides the rhinos…..

          • Emmaleigh504

You are correct about the sweaters (not cashmere, I’m a librarian with librarian pay!), and interesting and awesome shoes (IMO). Otherwise I’m more of a more Drew Barrymore in pants/jeans, and I glare not shush (I’m not in that kind of library anyway). πŸ™‚
I really should go to a PoP happy hour some time, but I’m totally giving a fake name πŸ˜‰

        • What do you think I look like?

      • I do know what he looks like which made the dream more vivid….

    • Emmaleigh504

Welcome to the club. I’ve had many a dream about people here and on twitter even though I have no idea what they look like.

    • I’ve had dreams about him too! And much like Emilie, I have faces that, especially in Irving’s case, I *know* are not right. Like even though I know he’s white, I always picture him as a very suave middle-aged black man.

      • Emmaleigh504

omg me too! I was shocked to find out he wasn’t! Now I picture him as a younger, beefier Anthony Bourdain πŸ™‚

        • With a touch of J. Peterman

          • +1 on the J. Peterman — except that I’ve imagined more than a touch. One of the few white guys who could pull of wearing a fedora…. I haven’t pictured many people — although I do also have an image of Jack 5 and his parrot. Thanks Emilie504 for instigating this “image” thread!

          • Emmaleigh504

I thought Jack5 was white & 25 for ages (some how I missed the Jamaican family comments). I’ve seen real pictures of him, so I know what he looks like πŸ™‚

      • Wait, what?! Where was the spoiler alert. I had the same image too. Has he always been white?

        • Emmaleigh504

Oddly enough, I picture his son as a younger version of Harrison from Scandal and his daughter as Lexi from Grey’s Anatomy (I love me some Shonda Rhimes).

      • binpetworth

Now see, I’m always pictured Irving Streete as a less wrinkly Ernest Hemingway myself…

        • I’ve just settled on him looking like the guy from the “most interesting man in the world” commercials. You’re all people from commercials to me. πŸ˜€ (Unless I’ve met you, in which case my expectations were blown to bits.)

          • saf

Maybe that’s why nobody other than Dan talks to me when I go to Popville happy hours – only a few of you know what I look like!

      • omg! he’s not?! LOL funny that we all had the same image.

    • Rave: This whole thread you started! I needed a chuckle.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: The super organized office manager is gone for a few months and our office is falling apart without her. She’s only been gone a week!
Rave: Today I get to work on something that is outside my usual subject matter. My brain is enjoying the change.
Rave: Got a tiara in the mail yesterday from a tiara loving librarian. #ProjectTiara FTW

  • GiantSquid

RANT: Seasonal allergies. I’d enjoy the weather a lot more without the raging headache.
Revel: Federal tax refund is in the bank!
Rant: Entire federal tax refund is going towards paying off my evil masters’ certificate loan of doom.
Revel: With tax refund, loan will be over halfway paid off.
Revel: Ink refills for my fountain pen arrived. Let letter writing commence!

    • I feel your rant. After about 4 years, I’ve finally admitted that allergies are likely here to stay. I stocked up on a very large bottle of Claritin. Once that kicks in, I’m good to go. Hope you find a remedy that helps!

  • Thanks for the tough love on dating assholes yesterday Popville πŸ™‚ I booked a therapy session and in the comments wrote “I would like to explore why I like assholes so much.” Hopefully my therapist gets a kick out of that.

The nice guy stepped up his game last night too. He remembered something that I wanted to try (fancy beer) that I didn’t even remember, and sought it out. Major brownie points and looking forward to seeing him again soon.

    • epric002

      congrats on both counts!

    • Not the clearest wording but hopefully he gets the right idea πŸ˜‰ Props for being strong enough to seek out help when you needed it!
Happy “the nice guy” is around, hope he keeps doing things right!

      • Haha oh no, your therapist is going to walk into the session thinking “well there’s a 50% chance this is just a girl with relationship problems, and a 50% chance we have a serious rectal obsession problem.”

    • As a therapist, I’d have to say that I would totally get a kick out of such a comment. Sometimes it takes weeks, or even years to get someone to that point! πŸ˜‰

Rant rant rant: awakened at 2 AM by pounding on the front door. It was a cop, wanting to tell me that someone running from them had trashed our back fence.

More rant: now I have to get it fixed. And I have to figure out how to get it paid for.

Rave: The cop bothered to stop, wake us (ok, not so much a rave), and give us a report number.
