Bar Charley Looking to Extend Hours on 18th Street

1825 18th Street, NW

Bar Charley opened up in the former Cajun Experience space near Lauriol Plaza early last month. They’re already looking to expand hours – from a liquor license application posted out front it lists their current hours as Sunday through Thursday 8 am – 11 pm and Friday & Saturday 8 am – 12 am and they are hoping to extend them to Sunday through Thursday 8 am – 2 am and Friday & Saturday 8 am – 3 am.

Anyone try them out yet?

  • My roommate and I went a few weeks ago and we loved it. The drinks were excellent and well made and the drink menu was right up my alley- read: lots of gin. Paul (who apparently won 3rd in the Express best of bartenders for 2013) appropriately coated the glass of my sazerac with absinth instead of drowning the drink with it. Staff and other patrons at the bar were friendly and I’ll definitely be going back many times. I didn’t try any food, but I plan to.

  • Been there a bunch of times. Always a great crowd and execution is always great. Paul is awesome behind the bar. Also have a great patio, and a really cool communal table. Definitely should be open later.

Their cocktails are crazy delicious (try the one with wasabi!) and the small plates I tried were also really good. I tried this eggplant thing with a mustard dip and the fried oysters and I would order both again. 2 thumbs up!

  • I’ve been to the bar twice and both times the drinks were great. They have a couple of cocktail taps with good stuff flowing, and I would also recommend the 80’s Old Fashioned, among some other good classics.

  • Honestly i don’t see them getting those hours in Dupont that’s a pretty quiet residential spot.

  • I got a flyer on my stoop about the new hours. I live on Swann St. There is a movement afoot to squash the request. The flyer is overboard and talks about the place becoming a magnet for young loud drunks. I doubt the NIMBY’s behind it have been there. The bar is tiny! The bigger problem is the crowd from Lauriol Plaza parking badly, driving too fast and making noise coming and going. 99% of those folks don’t live in the area. The crowd at Charley is decidedly a neighborhood crowd.
