  • Thank god. I live right by there and the place is never, ever open. Hope someone who wants to run a market takes over. The neighborhood needs it.

    • Ella is awesome and her market will be sorely missed 🙁

      • There’s been at least one bid already, with the provision that the current owner can continue running the market.

    • I walk my dog past the store every night and have only seen it closed before 7:30 a handful of times. I’m always mad at myself for not having any money with me to buy some of the tasty soups that are advertised on the chalkboard.

    • As sad as I am to see a business falter, I’ve talked with friends in the neighborhood and I don’t think the market fit in. From what I could do tell, the market primarily sold soups and sandwiches along with one-off gourmet items, like bottles of wine or cupcakes. Personally, I would much rather see a true market that’s closer in purpose to Windows café a few blocks away where one can buy missing ingredients for dinner or pick up a few missing items.

  • I remember when that market first opened… it was pretty awesome. But I know it’s been robbed a couple times so it’s not surprise that it has closed.

Well it does have “solid steal support”.

    • it’s not closed. it was robbed a couple of times about 5 years ago when Simon ran it, and was subsequently vacant for about 2 years. Currently is operated by a wonderful woman named Ella who really goes to the nth degree in finding interesting and delicious foods and drinks.

Given that she’s a sole proprietor and there is a history of robberies there, I’m not surprised that she tailors her hours and isn’t hanging out there after dark with her cash drawer and booze. I wouldn’t either.

  • That sounds like a bargain for a building on such a prominent corner. As far as the market goes, it may be a little ahead of its time – too much high-end stuff for a neighborhood that is almost there, but not quite. I like the idea of it, but have never bought anything there. If it was a hardware store or a nice non-cupcake bakery, I would be there all the time.

  • It was offered to the prior owner of the market for $825k in 2002 or 2003. I thought that was a good price then and I think it is a good deal now. You are in a positive cash flow situation with the rent from the retail and the residential units.
