Alphonse Italian Market & Osteria Applies for Liquor License at 1212 U Street, NW – Applying to Be Open 24 Hours

Alphonse Italian Market
1212 U Street, NW

Back in December or 2012 we learned that a new Italian restaurant from the owners of Russia House and Biergarten Haus was coming to 1212 U St, NW. The space will sit beneath the Duke Ellington mural when it returns to U Street in April. A liquor license placard posted out front lists the restaurant as:

Alphonse Italian Market & Osteria

Restaurant serving prepared food with a market component. Seating capacity 101 and total occupancy load of 171.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the market component turns out.

And while alcohol service will be Sunday through Thursday 11 am – 2 am and Friday & Saturday 11 am – 3 am – the application lists hours of operation as 24 hours.

More updates as they get closer to opening.

  • I’d be happy to see an Italian market but the last thing we need is another Italian restaurant.

  • I was hoping the trade name chosen for this place would be the same as the corporate name indicated on the DCRA notices: “Italian Food Concept.” It sure isn’t clear how this concept will be different from the eight or so other Italian or pizza places nearby.

  • Do office buildings need to apply for their hours of operation? Why does the city regulate businesses in this way?

    • Lots of cities regulate the hours of businesses that serve alcohol — DC is far from the exception.

      • I’m not talking about the hours of serving alcohol but just the hours of being open.

      • exactly. It’s lile how having a liquor license is code to screwed by ANCs, ABRA, voluntary agreements, etc. Other businesses don’t have to put up with that BS.
