UHaul Misjudgement Causes Building Evacuations in NoMa Last Night

A reader sends word that there was a Uhaul accident at the First and M St, NE parking lot around 9:15pm last night:

“It looks like he took out part of the sprinkler and set off the fire alarm system, which caused the Harris Teeter and apartment buildings to be briefly evacuated.”

  • I think the point of that “enter” bar is that if you hit that, you shouldn’t go any farther, because you’ll probably hit something else. So I’m surprised that the truck went far enough to hit something else.

    • Yea, that driver is an idiot. I have no idea how someone like that can hold down a job that allows them to afford living there.

      • Oh, you’d be surprised. There are some very “highly educated” people in this city who are complete and utter idiots!

Not to mention, the height of U-Haul vehicles is usually posted prominently on the dashboard, and garage entrances almost always display the height clearance.

  • Oh My. I feel bad for the uhaul driver. I’ve almost done that a few times. How embarrassing (and costly probably).

I rode through there last night right after this happened. I wondered what was going on.

I’ve seen Uhaul drivers do some pretty stupid things on the road. You get a typical car driver (who most likely doesn’t drive a car that well) and you put them behind the wheel of a big truck. What could possibly go wrong?

  • Wow I’d be mortified if I did that! One of many reasons I do not put myself behind the wheel of a big truck- bad spatial perception!

  • just let the air out of the tires

Reminds me of that scene from the latest season of Arrested Development.

I remember watching UHaul trucks do this on Storrow Drive underpasses in Boston every fall when the students returned. Good times.

  • So, those are the affluent folks of constitution square? Never really believed people lived there until now.

  • A friend of mine scraped the roof of a Uhaul truck once doing something like this (except it wasn’t a parking garage, it might have been a bridge). And he has a degree from Harvard. His advice? Always pay a little extra for the insurance in case something like this happens!

  • That garage ain’t got nothing on the WORLD’S TOUGHEST BRIDGE!
