Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Rant: Shoulder and neck sore from my tumble yesterday…

Rave: Had a great night at the barn – the mare is feeling better! Two rides in the beautiful evening last night.

Rant: So nervous about my visa application…

Rave: Peach shortbread and zucchini pasta 🙂

    • When did you apply for the visa and from which country? I just got a UK student visa yesterday. The process was easier than I expected.

      • It’s not the visa process per se – the USG made a “technical” error in the collection of my biometric data and it was not apparent until the other government (rather not say which one…) reviewed my application. They had to send it back to me and I had to go and get the USG to recollect my biometric data. Hoping it went fine this time – there was no indication of what went wrong last time…

        • The biometric data was such a pain in the ass. I had to spend about two hours driving for about 5 minutes of fingerprinting. I wish I could give that stuff in DC instead of out by Mt. Vernon.

        • andy

The North Koreans keep rejecting my visa application too!

      • How long did the process take you? I haven’t started as I haven’t finalized where I’ll be living in London for the school year. It’s starting to stress me out a little that I don’t have these pieces together yet….

        • It only took me a few weeks, but they say it can take up to 12 weeks. If you start your paperwork now and then submit it as soon as you have all of your documentation you should do ok.

    • Yesterday was perfect riding weather, glad you were able to enjoy it. Peach shortbread sounds amazing – recipe? I am imagining it with vanilla ice cream – mmm.

    • I will second the request for the peach shortbread recipe, please!

  • Rant: So many rats in my neighborhood and we are hearing them in the walls.
Q: Has anyone had success contacting the city for rat abatement?

    • Yes, we had a great experience. The rat abatement folks are awesome. However, you can’t do it alone. You will need to get your neighbors on board, as obviously, rats are not confined to your small area. I would reach out to your ANC rep to see if they can help coordinate the process. It works but it won’t work if some neighbors refuse to do their part.

    • Yes, it does work. Get as many people on your block as possible to sign on.

  • Dear cancer. F- You.

  • Rave: Tubing in Shenandoah was awesome! I would highly recommend Shenandoah River Outfitters!
Rave: I had off yesterday and managed to get a couple hours in on the beach for what turned out to be a beautiful afternoon.
Rave: Farm stand stop on my way back to DC – affordable fresh local food
Rant/Rave: Traps caught three mice while the house was empty over the weekend. We haven’t caught one in weeks. Hopefully this is the end of them.

  • PDleftMtP

Rant: All the lost animal posts saying “no collar or microchip.” I don’t want to rag on anyone individually, but get your cat a breakaway collar and tag at Petco. Ten bucks, and you can snap it on (you don’t have to get kitty to hold still long enough to buckle it). That way I’ll return your cat when I find him/her (I’ve done it before).

Rave: Go read @nprscottsimon’s Twitter account. Right now. It’s a deeply human and moving story of the days I wish I’d had with my mother at the end.

    • GiantSquid

I agree wholeheartedly with your rave about @nprscottsimon. Absolutely beautiful use of Twitter and highlighting the dignity that can and should happen at end of life. Had a good, therapeutic cry when she passed but also felt comforted that I’ll have that kind of love and support when I have surgery on Thursday.

    • It was an incredibly moving thing to read last night. His writing was just beautiful and his mother sounded like a lovely lady.

    • I appreciate the thought on collars for cats but my cat can get out of them. EVERY single kind. After about 4 different collars being ripped off in about 2 hours, I gave up. I do have a microchip but seriously some cats are houdini-like in their ability to get out of collars. I wish I could find one that worked.

    • My cats back home also lose collars ridiculously quickly. We even got a harness for one of them for a while, but we were afraid of it choking him if he got stuck… Some of them just reeeallyyy hate collars.

  • Rant: Feeling aimless and useless, both in career and extracurricular activities.

  • Emmaleigh504

Rave: Getting a visitor parking pass took about 30 seconds and the police officer was really friendly. I was afraid for nothing!

    Rant: Feel like crap today.

Rave: Lots of meetings today, so maybe I won’t have to do too much actual work.

  • epric002

rant: hour and a half all hands during lunch. subject: email migration. shoot me in the effing face. the 15 emails you’ve already sent on this topic weren’t sufficient? what an efficient use of our time. grrrrrrrr.

  • Rant: T-Mobile is horrible.

    Rant: Mosquitoes

Rant: No google chromecast for me yet, Best buy says the delivery is delayed.

Rave: Nice weather. We should all have a happy hour somewhere soon.

    • andy

chromecast seems like something I wished for for the longest time! Like, can’t they just stream what’s on my computer on my frikkin TV already? And then whatever came out was never that, exactly.

    • gotryit

What’s wrong with T-mobile? I’ve been happy with my service and it’s much cheaper than the other options: $100 for three lines of unlimited talk, text and 500MB data each.

      • PDleftMtP

Reception can be crappy. I have trouble with dropping the network both in Mt Pleasant and at work down by GW. It’s better than it used to be but still can be frustrating.

        • Exactly, I have a brand new HTC One, and I get dropped calls constantly… It’s affecting my desire to call people out of fear of calls dropping. Horrible service in DC that I pay 85$ a month for. I don’t think it’s the phone causing the problem.

    • Emmaleigh504

Happy Hour at Jack’s house!! I’ll bring wine.

  • binpetworth

Rant: Walked by 3 cars on 13th St this morning that had smashed windows. One had a trail of stuff around it as well (purse, scarves, etc.) Feel so bad for people waking up to that.
Rant: Another round of sinus pressure, post-nasal drip and sneezing. Last one lasted 7 weeks and ended with antibiotics after moving into my chest.
Rave: Saw on the news last night this has been the coolest July in several years. Am lovin’ it, despite the allergies.

  • Rave: Got the new Daniel Silva book from the library. I requested it a couple of months before it was out, and I expected a much longer wait for it.

Rant: Lots of computer/network problems today and too many meetings.

  • andy

Rave: the school where my kid will start next month improved its scores on DC-CAS!
Rant: the scores of the schools on the other side of Rock Creek Park
Rant #2: the scores of the schools east of the Anacostia
    Rave: scores are improving!

  • Rave: Finally got to read the new Khaled Hosseini book. Finished around 11 last night, crying wholeheartedly. He is a phenomenal writer.
Rant: Got the reading done while RCN was installing new cable, phone, internet. 8 hours on Sunday, another three hours yesterday. Turns out the issue was their bad equipment. Argh!!!
Rave: our speed for watching Netflix increased 1000x!!! So long, crappy Verizon internet speeds.

  • GiantSquid

Rant: Feeling really stupid for missing the part on my paperwork where I had to stop using Advil last week. Really hope it doesn’t push back my surgery date.
Rant: Not sure how I could be a functional human being in pain and on no sleep, which the Advil mitigates.
Rave: Giving Peapod a try. Mr. Squid says it’s ok. Somehow ended up with 5 rolls of paper towels and 2 bottles of Sriracha. Not a bad thing.

    • Emmaleigh504

I have a pal who had a different surgery last year and her doctor never said anything about giving up Advil and she took it up til the surgery. She thought it was weird that my Dr said to stop taking it.

      • Emmaleigh504

So hopefully, it won’t mess up your surgery time.

        • GiantSquid

I’m going to lose it if it gets pushed back.

          • Emmaleigh504

I would be inclined to not tell the doc & surgical staff, but I’m a dare devil that way. [this is not a recommendation, I have no medical knowledge]

          • No, no no. Better to tell. Just stop taking it now and call the doc today and ask what painkillers you can take. There are some on the approved list. Sorry about the advil.

I’m gonna have fun after b/c all of my pain killers I’m supposed to be on for months (after I get off the good stuff) are NSAIDS and I’m not supposed to take those because they give me migraines. So I get to chose between potential soul crushing migraines or nausea/tear inducing leg pain that will inhibit recovery. Super fun!

      • saf

They made me stop taking it 6 weeks before my hip replacement.

No lie, I thought I was going to die from the pain. I had not realized how much pain that stuff was actually relieving.

    • Advil is a blood thinner, which is why I imagine that they told you to stop using it. I’m no doctor, but I would think it would clear out of your system in a lot less than a week.

  • Rant: Being teased with a picture like that on a Tuesday! At least wait until Friday to make us wish we were outdoors.
Rave: Fattoush made with New Jersey tomatoes (the best tomatoes in the world).

  • skj84

Rant: Surprise meeting at work means i have to stay late.

Rant: Mosquitos. They bit my legs and arms up yesterday despite the heavy duty Off i used.

Rave: I had a wonderful home cooked dinner in my backyard last night. I need to go out there more often.

  • MsNesbitt

Rant: Having a very hard morning. My little rabbit passed away last night, likely from an intestinal issue. There are no evening emergency rabbit vets, so I was hoping he would be okay until this morning when I could take him to the doctor. He was a naughty bunny, but he was my little buddy and I’ll miss him.
Rave, I guess: Fortunately, my mother was in town for something else, so she and my sister were able to come over this morning and help me take care of transporting him to the vet’s office. She also footed the cremation bill, which was very kind.

    • Emmaleigh504

I’m so very sorry you lost your furry friend. I’m glad you had people who could help you out.

    • So sorry about your bunny. I had an awesome bunny growing up who was friends with our cats (sometimes too friendly, if you know what I mean) and incredibly smart. They are wonderful animals.

  • Rant: Teresa and Joe of RHONJ indicted.

Rave: I call dibs on Gia!

  • 14thandChapin

Rave: Just got tickets to see Thievery Corporation @9:30 club, again super excited/nervous to get tickets for free fest (i need to go), playoff softball game tonight…chicks dig the long ball
Rant: SOOO slow at work the past week or so (boss has been sick) and other people working from home…things will be picking up with end of month reports but seeesh
Revel: The lead singer from the band CHVRCHES is the most adorable girl i have ever seen!

  • We are not all dying to know. Some of us know way too much about these folks already.

  • Yep, and it’s more like $20, once you get the personalized tag to hang on the $10 collar. My cat went through three in three months (he’s not smart, so it takes him a while to figure out how to get them off), and I said “screw it”. We settle for just knowing all our neighbors and all our neighbors knowing our cat.

  • Well this ended up in the wrong place….

  • speaking of cell service. anyone in the area use Virgin Mobile?

interested in seeing how the service is since the price is 30 a month

  • Rant: Just realized that the resume I sent off to my dream job had a typo in it! Although it isn’t something that an employer would notice- in one of my jobs 10 years ago, I put in the wrong starting month (the dates are listed as “3/2001”). Right year, wrong month, which means that it looks like I had a few months less experience at that position than I actually did. Argh!

Rave?: This really is the perfect job for me, and actually unites all of the random paths I’ve taken in my career- really does seem like all the wayward paths have been leading up to this position/program. I wrote an awesome cover letter as well, so just holding my breath to see if it all works out.

  • I second that. And I’m sorry, to you or your loved one.

  • I’ve had virgin mobile for a little over 2 years and have never had any issues with it.

  • So sorry to hear about your little guy. Obviously, this info is way too late but if at some point you get another pet, are you familiar with the Animal Medical Center in the east 60s? (New York, right?) They’re open 24/7, and I’m not sure if they treat rabbits, but I know they can accommodate some “exotic” pets (a friend who had a pet hedgehog used the AMC a lot, that’s how I know about them).

  • We’re Instagram buddies, and she frequently criticizes my home decor on Twitter.

    • Emmaleigh504

Pants on fire! I offered 1 maybe 2 suggestions to your otherwise nicely decorated place! I kept the mean stuff to myself 😉 Joking!

  • Gah, that was supposed to be a reply to MsNesbit. Sorry!

  • We’re Instagram buddies, and she frequently criticizes my home decor on Twitter.

  • Your cat can’t get out of a microchip.

  • Rant: According to WaPo article-
“92 percent of white students were proficient in reading, for example, compared with 52 percent of Hispanic students, 44 percent of black students and 42 percent of poor children.”
Not good when half of certain cohorts are being left behind. I don’t know what the solution is, but there is definitely still a big problem.

  • Even better is to not let the cat outdoors. Much, much better for the cat.

  • I concur. Lost my dad to that f-ing b!tch cancer.

  • 1. Houston, we seem to be having a reply-formatting problem.
    2. Cat must go out. He MUST. If we don’t let him out, he stands at the door and meows at such volume and such duration that the neighbors assume the worst. Even if he’s asleep, he dashes for the door whenever anyone walks in that direction, tripping them up in the process. He isn’t smart enough to “get used to” the idea of staying inside. (He’s 9. We’ve had many years to try everything.) Judge all you want, my cat is an indoor-outdoor cat, and that’s the end of the story.

  • Mosquito coils are the most effective in my backyard for both daytime and nighttime mosquitos.

  • Replies gone wild! Chaos! My brain hurts!

  • Damn – I can’t keep up with all these mediums!

  • Rant: For some reason when people are replying it’s just showing up at the bottom of the stream.

  • LOVE the neti pot! I use it when I feel like I’m getting sick, and it totally works.

  • ugh, this was for the neti pot post up above…

  • Then don’t cry to us when he gets hit by a car. And microchip him!!

  • As long as you recognize the dangers of that arrangement. And if he’s indoor/outdoor, then definitely microchip him.

  • Can I bring my unlocked iPhone 4 to Virgin Mobile and use their network?

  • RANT: Hey PoP, the “Reply” feature seems to be broken. It’s adding my reply to someone at the bottom of this comment chain. Weird.

  • Blithe

Rant: not feeling very blithe today. And reading Scott Simon’s beautiful twitter posts brought back a lot of feelings and memories that I’ve been suppressing for awhile.

Rave: at 1:47, I just felt much better – like a wave of sunshine. I’ve no idea why, but I’m glad, and grateful, and hope it lasts.

Rave: Mint tea with orange blossom honey. Yum. I used to hate honey until I tried this one. Now I’m a convert.

  • oh yes i’ve been reading all about this. it’s sad. this week’s episode was a mess. joe giudice is the grossest.

  • Does my reply work?

  • No, I don’t think so. You have to buy a phone.

  • Yeah, man, I know exactly what you mean! 🙂

  • Prince Of Petworth

Looks like there is a problem with anonymous people replying in a threat. IT is trying to figure out why it’s not working. If you pick a user name it should solve the problem right away.

  • I think in many cases, the owners just abandon them and don’t want them back, so no collar, number or chip.

  • Why $85 per month? Doesn’t T-Mobile offer an all-inclusive $50/month plan?

  • It’s too bad they aren’t actually cohorts. If they were, you could use decimation to get them motivated.

  • re: virgin mobile–I switched to it a few months ago and love it. works just as well as any other service, and is so much cheaper!
