Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

  • Rant: Was one minute late to my 7am spin class and they wouldn’t let me in.

    Rant: Not really any snow.

Possible Rave: Maybe I can slip out of work early since hardly anyone is here and our clients aren’t in today.

  • Rave: About to purchase my first car. Deciding between a 4 door yaris or honda fit (and leaning toward the fit currently). Just want something that will last a while and not break my wallet. Anyone here drive either of those?

    Rant: Car payments. Insurance. etc.

Rave: Nice big snowflakes coming down out here in VA. Don’t have to go anywhere today.

Friends of mine just bought a Fit and they love it.

    • If you won’t be driving it that much (not using it for a commute, etc) I suggest going with Progressive and enrolling in their Snapshot program. I hardly pay anything for insurance because the Snapshot device determined I was a good driver who does less than 30 miles a day.

      • Thanks for the tip on Snapshot. I have progressive insurance and am going to check it out.

        • saf

Just remember, when you install this, you are giving them permission to track your movements and your driving habits and change the price of your insurance based on that data. While it may seem harmless, you have no way of knowing what else will be done with that data.

          • They say they can’t raise the price of your insurance because of the results, only decrease it. And it seems pretty forgiving (the device registered a lot of hard brakings when my girlfriend drove the car, but they didn’t count against me). I guess the information could be used against me in some way, but I can’t imagine how.

        • My insurance decreased by nearly $1600 a year since I switched from Geico to Progressive’s Snapshot (though some of that decrease is due to me moving from Northern VA to DC at the same time).

          • Sorry if that sounds like an ad… I am in no way affiliated with Progressive aside from being a very happy customer!

    • I’ve had my Fit for almost two years and am really happy happy with it; surprising amount of head room, the seats reconfigure nicely to accommodate for more space, huge windshield. It has more road noise than higher end cars, but I stopped noticed that really quickly. I recommend it…Gas mileage is pretty good too!

I love my Fit. It’s a 2007 sport model (bought in 06) with about 45,000 miles on it.

It carries all the things, and all the people. It folds 80 bazillion different ways.

I’ve done all recommended maintenance and replaced the tires, but that’s it.

    • my husband and I have a 2009 fit (bought it used) and we love it!

    • If you’re looking to save money, go with a pre-owned vehicle. You’ll get a better car for the amount of money you have. Get something with less that 40,000 miles. Since you’ll just be using it for errands and trips, you don’t need something that’s absolutely brand new.

Cars lose 10% of their resale value the moment you drive off the lot and nearly 20% by the end of the first year. Buying a new car is basically throwing money away.

    • Also have to join the chorus of Fit reccs… Yaris is not very utilitarian like the Fit is. The way you can fold down the back seats, you pretty much have as much room as a mini-van, quite amazing.

    • My mother got a used 2008 fit and I was driving it in the snow a couple of weekends ago when I visited her in SLC and was pleasantly surprised with how well it handled. It was pretty comfortable, too. Trying to get the windows to defog is tough, but that seems to be true on all entry level cars (it was impossible in our old Focus).

  • rave: easiest commute ever to work this morning.
rant: devils on this losing streak. they really need to get out of this funk.

  • Rant: It’s freaking raining! On the one hand, it’s great to be telecommuting. On the other hand, if we don’t get five or six inches of snow, I’m going to have a seriously disappointed six-year-old who has been waiting two years to go sledding.

    • Aww, poor kid. Sledding, and snow days in general, were such a big part of my childhood winters. It’s sad that today’s kids aren’t getting as many opportunities to enjoy it as we did.

    • I’ll be a seriously disappointed middle aged woman if it doesn’t kick it up a bit. Really.

    • Telecommuting here too. 🙁

And your post made me remember that I have a brand-new, unused plastic sled that I bought for myself about two years ago and have never had any occasion to use. 🙁

Revel: Slippers arrived just in time for a work-from-home-in-my-PJ’s day

Rant/Revel: Reminded landlords about issues with house such as leaking ceiling for almost two years, new windows and doors from move-in four years ago, etc. Curious to see if they’ll be fixed or we’ll be moving (ugh).

Rant: Hair is at awkward growing out phase, look like Justin B from a few years ago. Don’t have patience to grow it out but also don’t want to prove hubs correct by chopping it yet again. Will find cute short hair photos on Pinterest in meantime.

    • GiantSquid

One more revel: bought hubs a tiny bonsai for his desk at home. It’s so cute!

      • Prince Of Petworth

Awesome! Tell me if it thrives. And if it does – what did you do? I bought an awesome one in Eastern Market last summer and it lasted like three weeks even though I followed all the instructions!

  • Rant: Snow >:(
Rave: Still in my PJs and head wrap…
Rant: Im sleepy and I dont know if I can make it through this 2 hour call!!!
Rave: The call doesnt require that I use skype or facetime

  • Rant: No snow yet on this snow day and hubby is in phone meetings all day while I have “quiet” research work to do. Tough to do both in our tiny apartment.
Rave: Looking forward to sweet potato and black bean chili and corn bread muffins for dinner. Yum.

      • Sure!
Large sweet potato cubed, half a red onion, and some garlic (sautee and stew for a bit to soften sweet potato) in some olive oil.
As the potato softens, I add one can black beans (with juice), one can chickpeas, one can corn and then a full thing of salsa. Let it bubble and stew while adding your spices (chili powder, chipotle, etc.). Once the potatoes are cooked and everything is warm, it’s good to go.
I think that’s it… We serve over quinoa or rice and add sliced avocados on top and cheese. Enjoy!

  • Rant: Georgia avenue near to Harvard Street is deplorable, there are construction sites that flow over into the road and a really sketchy set of steel plates that look like they’re about to fall in, they go all the way across the road. What the heck happened to safety inspectors for these projects?! Sherman Ave. and 6th street/Warder are no better. It’s a total shame in the era of DC budget surplus.

Rant: Had to go in to work today… I have to sit at my desk doing nothing because everyone else is out just to earn a check. I’m thankful to have a job, but remember a time when a snow day meant a snow day.

Rave: Looks like it may not be bad snow after all, someone stole my snow shovel, so I might not need to buy one until next winter! I rock! I guess. >:/

Rave: My luxury couches arrive this weekend! I actually went into work today because I didn’t have a comfortable seat to watch TV from, that and I didn’t want to use my vacation time.

  • Rant: My office is open so at work.

Rant: People so overreact to the weather here.

Rave: Looking at a condo tonight. I think has potential. What do people think about Bloomingdale neighborhood?

    • My favorite neighborhood in DC…wish I bought there instead of Ust. it’s low key, convenient, beautiful row houses….near the capitol.

    • Big fan of Bloomingdale, though i wonder if I’d get bored there. What condo are you looking at? Parker Flats?

      • i guess it depends on where you live now and what you like to do.

i live here and find i spend most of my time outside the neighborhood, but i still love it. i find it very central to everything.

  • Rant: Where’s the thundersnow?!
Rave: Teleworking. Absolutely Fabulous is on until 2PM!
Rantish: First solo assignment at the new job but I can’t concentrate for more than 2 minutes at a time.

  • skj84

Rant: I think I could’ve gone into work. We were told to use our own judgement and I decided to go off the federal government. It doesn’t seem to super horrible out there. So there goes another pto day.

Rave: I did get to sleep in and I’ve made an amazing brunch! Getting my nom on.

Rant: I may still have to go into a rehearsal tonight. While we do need this rehearsal, I want to enjoy my snow day fully! That means lazing about the house and watching TV uninterrupted.

  • Rant: 45 minutes on hold to rebook canceled flight to Chicago! Come on American!

  • Emmaleigh504

    Rant: Disappointing snow storm.

Rave: Lucky to be on the telework pilot program so I don’t have to waste precious PTO on this.

Rant: My poor team are not on the pilot program and have to waste their PTO, plus they are both new so they don’t have much PTO to begin with.

  • rave: staying with my bf in the burbs and enjoying lots of snow
rave: i also have black bean & sweet potato chili simmering on the stove
rave: the west wing streaming on netflix while i work

  • Rant: Slushy rain, and the wind is picking up. I wanted a blizzard before Spring.

Rave: Sitting by the fireplace with some hot tea and a working sump pump.

  • Tried to make cottage cheese for the first time with disappointing results. But used the whey to make ricotta cheese => success!

  • Rant: Disappointing snow storm! C’mon, Mother Nature, quit holding back!

Rave: Staff lunch at the Tombs, which was virtually empty due to spring break and storm. Those were some good fries.

Rave: Keeping myself occupied with BuzzFeed and Top Chef Mahjong.

Rave: Looks like I’ll be making some black bean/sweet potato chilli!

  • Rant: Worst snow day ever

  • Rave: I had an AWESOME fake snow day. I was a little disappointed that there’s not a winter wonderland outside, but I didn’t let that ruin my day. I got my work done early. I watched a movie. I took a midday nap (highly recommended). I read from a book I’d been neglecting. I’ve got dinner cooking in the oven. Hell, I might even step out for a drink later. This is by far the best hump day I’ve had in a long time!

    • I’m jealous. I got up at 6am, walked to work with wind gusts that kept threatening to destroy my umbrella, sat in an eerily quiet office wrangling a spreadsheet all day, walked home carrying groceries while getting pelted with ice-cold rain, came home to find the dogs had peed and pooped all over the kitchen… yeah, a pretty shitty day.

  • RANT: Nothing but rain and slush. The Weather Channel hypes everything but can predict NOTHING. Looks like another winter without an actual snow storm. What’s this? Year 3?

Rave: I have an excuse to lay around in my pajama bottoms

Rant: I can’t find anyone to go to happy hour with

    • Yeah, I had the same problem. None of my friends are leaving the house for HH. Looks like I’m resigned to drinking single malt scotch in front of my fireplace for the evening. I just really wanted an excuse to change into normal clothes and get out of the house for an hour or two.
