New Supper Club Coming to Shaw from the Owners of GoodWood

Thanks to all who sent emails about this awesome development in Blagden Alley. From DC Home Gallery:

Earlier this fall we shared a local NPR story on GoodWood proprietors, Anna and Dan Kahoe, and the history behind their carriage house on 10th Street NW. Last week we were invited for a sneak peek at the renovated lower level of the carriage house, which the Kahoes plan to use as a supper club and neighborhood private event space.

This is great news, but I’m really frustrated that no new restaurants or shops are coming to 7th street. I know the opening of the O Street Market and the condos on the site of the Kelsey Gardens will change that but I want some options now, now, now!

  Perhaps if all of the old original retail buildings from the 1800s on 7th Street hadn’t been torn down in the 60s and 70s, and replaced by low income housing, we would see more retail on this side of O St. Market.
  I’m afraid the area of 7th Street, between L Street and O Street, is stuck with what it has for now…an ugly hodgepodge of shoebox apartments buildings and low income residential units.
  Very unfortunate.

It’s gorgeous, but I’m confused about whether they live there or whether it’s commercial space. If they live there, I’m full of envy.

As a long time resident of the street I’m thrilled to know the story behind the lot and carriage house, and I’m happy they will contribute to the area. I haven’t seen any zoning notices yet for a legit supper club (like Seasonal Pantry) but I do have to grouse that they have done nothing for the street view of this place. There is still a weight bench in the front yard! Throw in some plants for the 10th st side will you?

  agree that it is pretty ugly – I thought I saw someone boxing outside there one night on my way home from work.

What exactly is a “supper club?” Isn’t it a venue with dining and live entertainment of sorts? The last time I heard this term was the horrific Beverly Hills Supper Club fire near Cincinnati back in the late 70s.

  The term had some old-school significance, but has been re-appropriated as a term for “underground” restaurants (i.e. unlicensed). For example, the home taquerias that have cropped up lately. I have no way of knowing whether this is the case here, they may have just further re-appropriated the term.

Does anyone know the name of the painting in the sitting room?

At first glance I thought it was 3 separate paintings placed in one frame in which the center piece is “Stag at Sharkeys” by George Bellows. When you look at it closely however it appears to be one continuous/cohesive painting. Pretty sure its by George Bellows but does anyone know the exact name/have more information? Thanks!

  It looks like three canvases put together. Very stunning. I also recognize the middle one as bellows. I went to see the retrospective of his work at the national gallery and it was amazing
