The Shaw neighborhood listserv published a poll today asking folks who they’d like to see as chair of ANC6E02. They include the following description of ANC6E02:
“to represent the Shaw, Mt Vernon Square, NoMa and “SoNYA” areas.”
I’ve never heard SoNYA used before (presumably south of New York Avenue) but it looks like it comprises much of what some people call Mt. Vernon Triangle (not to be confused with Mt. Vernon Square, which I usually use.) Anyone know how far south the southern border would be?
Think “SoNYA” has any chance of sticking?
It does have a nice ring to it…

this is great! welcome back!
Hope you get her back soon
Unfortunately, many of the older residents would prefer empty storefronts over anything...
I had a Yorkie and it pains me to recall thoughts of when my see you next Tuesday gf left...
I hope your prayers are answered.
NO
SoNYA? Oh for f**k’s sake, please make it stop. Note to everyone in D.C.: THIS. ISN’T. NEW. YORK. And guess what? That’s OK. So for the love of Christ, stop trying to come up with ridiculous NYC-sounding names for parts of D.C. that don’t warrant their own names in any case!
Amen.
These neighborhoods ALREADY HAVE NAMES. No need to re-name them.
stop the maddness please…
I’m hereby declaring that Bloomingdale shall be split into NoRIA and NoFLA
This is the best suggestion ever. It was about time for the two distinctive communities in Bloomingdale to get their own identities.
“NORIA?” sounds like “Moria.” In keeping with the Lord of the Rings theme, I hereby dub my neighborhood “Mordor.”
I live in an area south of Bloomingdale.
Think SoBlo will stick?
BloMi doesn’t need to be partitioned any further, particularly since you have ENoCa to the east and FloRhIde to the west.
South of Bloomingdale?
SoBloMi.
Obviously.
This is getting out of hand. Someone contact the mayors office and tell them to cut this shit out. I still cringe/want to punch something when I hear people say “CoHi”
You’d never find this sort of tacky rebranding scheme in SAdMo.
Similar here when I hear “AdMo.”
The thing about AdMo is that people who don’t live in DC know and use that monkier. My friend in CT asked me over the holiday weekend, “How’s DC? You drinking in AdMo a lot?”
So yeah, that moniker is stuck now that non-residents use it pretty frequently. That’s the tipping point with with these abbreviations, IMHO.
I hope not. Even if people from outside D.C. have heard “AdMo,” maybe it’ll be one of those things where the use of “AdMo,” “CoHi,” etc. will mark the speaker as a newcomer to D.C. or as an outsider. And then once people know better, they’ll abandon the stupid abbreviations.
How is “CoHi” supposed to be pronounced, anyway? I keep thinking “koh-hee,” which is the Japanese pronunciation of “coffee.”
If I were to utter it, which I would not, I would pronounce it CoHigh. But what do I know, I’m just an unhip old fart.
AdMo isn’t that bad because its just shortening a name that already exists, but it should still be known as Adam’s Morgan. I won’t ever say AdMo in spoken conversation but I’ll use it in text messages, just like I’ll use – c’town (Chinatown), g’town (Georgetown), Dupont, Logan, f’heigths (Friendship Heights), H or Hst (H st NE, or like many tend to say Atlas District), etc…
I absolutely think SoNYA and NoMa are dumb and we need to leave neighborhoods with existing names alone.
F’Heights sounds like it should be some kind of epithet.
I did not think NoMa had a name before. My understanding is that it was just a bunch of empty lots. So for NoMa I dare say it makes a little sense but the rest already have names and making up new ones is just lame. If someone knows what the NoMa neighborhood was called prior to NoMa please let me know. NY Ave Metro Stop is not a neighborhood.
Swampoodle.
it hadn’t been called swampoodle since before union station was built. more recently it was called near north east, or some called part of the area simply sursum corda, as it is near to the sursum corda complex. or near the bus station.
it should be known as Adams Morgan
I noticed after posting. Thanks though.
Both CoHi and AdMo used to make me wanna junkpunch the speaker.
Now I take it as a warning sign that this person is not one I wish to speak with and I move along.
SoNYA…sounds like the a cheap counterfeit SONY knock off 3D Blue-ray player that you’d find for sale at Walmart for $9.99 on Black Thursday.
+100!
PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!!!
Wait until the NoChiTo Preservation Committee hears about this!
Getting tired of the fancy new monikers. I know they are trying to create hip an descriptive names… but for #*() sake, NOMA is half of the city. Why not name Takoma Park the NOMA metro? It and over half of the city are “North of Massachusetts Avenue”…

In other words: NO
Please NO!
I’m still trying to get “the Peeve” to catch on for Park View.
I am going to start using this immediately!
I foresee a major pet peeve.
“Park View” is only two syllables! It doesn’t need to be further shortened.
No way. NoHow (north of Howard) is a much better moniker than PeeVee.
SoNYA… sounds like some cheap, crappy toaster oven.
best thing ive seen all day!
Money can’t buy you class!
But you can try!
THIS. All it makes me think of is Real Housewives and we all know how that worked out for DC.
Why do people want to change the existing neighborhood names? They’re great as is and these new monikers are awful.
POP please don’t contribute to their usage!
Agreed.
I am official renaming my neck of the woods Petworth Heights. Or maybe WeGA. Try and stop me.
For real. Stop it. This is ridiculous.
I just hope they don’t start calling the area east of New York Avenue “ENYA.” Because I f**king hate Enya.
sail away! sail away! sail away!
Ok thats it… if this is where we are going I demand that Kalorama heights, with Decatur street to the south and Massachusetts ave. to the west, be renamed, DeMass… in honor of all the neighborhood renaming… whose with me?
One of my most hating things in the world is when old roads have 2, 3, 4 names that change often in a short amount of distance. This seems similar in heaping new names on old names. I’m sure when that disgustingly branded new building Louis is built at 14th and U we can look forward to several new names for the area. I like my neighborhood with the name it already has, NoThomCirSoLoCir
This is DC. There must be an acronym.
Bravo, sir.
so lame.
Please make it stop. I already feel like such a loser when I tell people that my nearest metro stop is NoMa. Yes, I know they changed the name of the station to actually be NoMa, but that doesn’t make it less stupid.
Maybe my new neighborhood of Truxton Circle (itself a debatable neighborhood) should be TruxCi? Kind of sounds like an awesome adult entertainer’s name. I do like the sound of SoBloMi instead of Truxton Circle, though.
Any “How I Met Your Mother” fans out there?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowisetrepla
“DoWiSeTrePla” is short for: DOwnWInd of the SEwage TREatment PLAnt.
Wow. lol
I just wanted to give some attention to our newly created ANC6E 07 SMD and thought that Alfreda Judd’s constituents deserved something better than NoMa since that SMD doesn’t come close to touching Mass Ave but instead hugs NY Ave on the south side (Is “South Side” taken — outside of Chi-town?) and one Bloomingdale map I saw did not include that area.
I love you Alfreda!

Also the informal poll is (corrected) for the entire 6E commission.
Shaw. That is SHAW.
Or, if you wish to use the name from before the last great re-naming (1960s), that is Mid-City.
No need to re-name it. It has a perfectly good name.
I knew this would be the funniest thing I’d read all day.
Can someone just bring back Swamp Poodle? best neighborhood name ever.
I would love to live in a place known as Swamp Poodle
Swampoodle. One word, one “p”.
My favorite BS new name is FRINJ – at the confluence of Florida, Rhode Island, and New Jersey Aves, near the gas stations, Dunkin Donuts, and that funeral home that is being renovated. SoBloMi is also nice.
FRINJ is a great name. but should be reserved for a tavern.
i nominate the post office building for this usage.
This is amazingly stupid.
This is so disrespectful to long term residents of these neighborhoods.
