Thanks to all who sent emails about the old burned out/boarded up church getting demolished at Vermont and W St, NW next to the Floridian building near the 9:30 Club. This is another JBG project, the one with the Harris Teeter letter of intent.

Usually I’m not a fan of tearing down old buildings (and the taller of the two demolished structures looks like it might’ve been a nice rowhouse at some point), but I think this is for the best.
The building on the left looked awful.

I’d call that an improvement. Has anyone heard an expected completion date for this phase of the JBG project? I thought I heard they were proceeding with the southern portion first.
That place could have become a great Monk brewery pub. Bummer.
Does anyone have a picture of what the church or the location overall looked like when it was functional?

I miss the old car wash that used to be there, they were really good. It was nice to have options outside of the horrible Mr. Wash on 14th street.

This is awesome. Im really looking forward to the new Harris Teeter and K-Mart that are going there.
They’re going to put a K-mart there? Aren’t they bankrupt and/or filed for bankruptcy? Why not put up a Circuit City or a Linen&Things…bad enough a ‘Big Box’ wants to go in the neighborhood, but at least make it one that is financially secure…nothing brightens an already poor neighborhood like a boarded up Big Box!….sheesh!
I’m also looking forward to a Harris Teeter. I live a few blocks away (to the north) and go to Giant for my groceries. It will be nice to have another store within walking distance.
