Firelake Grill Coming to former Ruby Tuesday Space at Van Ness and Wisconsin Ave, NW

Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up about a new tenant for the former Ruby Tuesday space, which closed back in May at Van Ness and Wisconsin Ave, NW. I couldn’t find a website for Firelake Grill but when I stopped by yesterday it looked the place was getting completely gutted. More info when it becomes available.

  • This is a terrible location. There’s neither parking nor much housing near by and it’s not along a popular mass transit route. I can’t believe that any restaurant will do well in this space.

      You’re kidding, right?

Swensen’s did well for years there. The surrounding restaurants do well.

Not everything needs parking. It’s pretty close to metro, VERY close to houses and to shopping, right at a major bus line, and in an AU office building. It’s a fine location.

      • sorry if i offended folks’ neighborhood pride but this strip simply gets little foot traffic. How’s Armand’s these days? Thriving on that foot traffic from all the people who wander down here from the Tenleytown metro?

    • Not a popular mass transit route? True, the Red Line is an entire FIVE BLOCKS away, but there is also a bus stop right outside the restaurant which serves the ridiculously popular 30 lines (31, 32, 36) and (I think) the H3 and H4. McLean Gardens and several other apartment buildings are just up the road, and AU is about a 1/2 mile away. Sure, Ruby Tuesday failed, but that’s probably because it was…Ruby Tuesday. Wishing all the best to the new restaurant!

    • Or you could beat me to it, saf, that works too :)

    • It’s never hard to find a parking space on the street around there. It’s a lot different than downtown.

    • I’m pretty sure that building has parking. You enter it on Van Ness Street, right next to Johnson’s.

      Plus it’s a few blocks from the Tenleytown Metro and on bus lines 31, 32, 36, 27, H2, H3 and H4.

  • I live two blocks from there, and would love to have more local sit-down options (viable options, not Ruby Tuesday). I’m really curious to see what this is going to be, and hoping it’s not some chain-like place.

A decent bar would be welcome, too!

  • As noted on DonRockwell.com over the weekend, the same contractors who appear to only do Michael Landrum restaurants are doing the work here. Could this be the Ray’s outpost Upper NW always wanted?

And it is a really good location. Silly to think otherwise.

    • How could one set of contractors stay in business by only working on Michael Landrum restaurant concepts? There aren’t that many of them!

  • I am sure there is more than one restaurant named Firelake Grill but if it so happens to be the same one that is in Mpls (long shot, I know), it is very good. It was one of my favorites for sure.

  • Jesus that is an ugly building.

  • terrible location, terrible building, terrible area of town. I used to work in Tenley Town, that place is such a turn off. Sure, nice homes if you’re married with kids and want to take it easy, I get it. The architecture is depresssing and the options are weak. Can you imagine being an undergraduate student at American? Where’s the culture for that area?
