I know cycling has problems, but the crackdown on juicing has gone too far.
All I know is I am tired of seeing every renovation is just a gut job, then a unoriginal...
I love Bacio pizza in Bloomingdale! They don't offer delivery but great neighborhood...
311? I think I found the flower thief. Suspect is helmeted male, hopped up on apple...
I tried their kabob last weekend, it was pretty good and a lot of food for the price....
Teenagers with guns at 3:15 pm on 17th St. SMH
The sad news is they will be back on the street in no time. I’m sure the family of the suspect that was arrested will be on the news tonight saying how he was set up and that he loves Jesus and has never been in trouble.
A friend of mine in Atlanta caught a teenager in his house. He tackled him and held him to the police got there. The police recognized him, as in “Oh, Delonte, it’s you again.” They told my friend that he could go to the police station and file a complaint, but Delonte would be out before they would.
Sheesh
this is a reason that the “castle doctrine” exists. Keeps these guys from re-appearing later.
It’s heartening to read that citizens helped/tried to help.
This guy on twitter https://twitter.com/kcm74 was supposedly tweeting about the incident as it happened. However, what he was tweeting bears no resemblance to the information provided by the police. *confused*
Awesome. I usually wait until after my morning mimosa before reading my morning racists rants. But today will be extra special.
What has been said that you consider racist?
It was deleted.
Do us all a favor… find an island all your own, and lock yourself in your house. Everyone is happy.
POP- what’s the point of letting comments like this pass your “filter”? I imagine many of the readers are like me, just trying to get updates on a crime that occurred in our neighborhood; instead we get the usual barrage of snarky hipster racist commentary.
Because it’s a blog. People express their opinions despite what you as a self appointed censor think. If you don’t like what people say, log off.
What is hipster racist commentary? Racist commentary by thick framed beardos who work as urban rooftop beekeepers?
Haha I was wondering that myself. It’s as if every discussion must include one racist rant and one bitch about hipsters. Now somehow the hipster became the racist. Can we retire these themes yet?
Also, the story on the shooting from Twitter along with that photo from Facebook clearly do not support the story from MPD. Maybe somebody stopped snitching.
RozCat, I’m not actually in front of the computer 24 hours a day monitoring comments. Especially on weekends. Obviously I delete racist comments like the one you mentioned. I have deleted it. I didn’t see it before because I was on a walkabout. If you ever see a racist comment like that, just email me and I’ll delete it post haste. Thanks.
I agree wholeheartedly with DC212…look at the stats. I’m fairly sick of all the excuses for and denial of BAD BEHAVIOR.
Yes, there is a difference between racism and statistics…. One is the belief in racial stereotypes and the other is tool to measure/interpret data. The racism word was thrown out on this thread not because someone “point[ed] out the increasing prevalence of these teenage crimes on innocent upstanding citizens” but because they related this crime to the race of the perpetrator. This is an almost textbook example of racism: they equated the crime to the persons race….. While per-capita crime rates by African-Americans are higher than whites, levels of poverty are much higher in blacks as are lower levels of education, etc… Crime is much more closely tied to age/sex (i.e. young males commit the most crimes) and class (i.e. poor and uneducated) than to race. The reason why people and journalists should be careful is that by equating crime to blacks, they are skipping over the causal factors (age/sex/class) and relating crime to race (which really isn’t a causal factor). That being said, most poor young males in DC are black. I will not be happy if blacks are driven from the city, but I’d be delighted if the people who commit crimes (and in many cases their parents with whom they live) are driven away. Given that gentrification is the major mechanism driving people out of the city, this should lead to DC residents (of all races) with higher incomes, education levels etc…, which should reduce the amount of crime. In fact, crime rates in DC are not nearly as bad as they were 15-20 years ago.
You say that crime is tied to age/sex/class – and are the causal factors of those who commit crimes. While it’s optimistic to want to remove race from this, they are intricately inter-linked, so one cannot totally remove race from the issues of age, sex or class, sad to say. It is a part of what makes the discussion complicated. It’s not to say that being a certain race means you are predisposed to committing crimes, but if being x race means it’s harder to fit the rungs of social climbing, then all factors are interlinked.
Even though race is correlated to income/education, the correlation is not perfect (rsquared does not =1), or in fact close to perfect. Given the high variability in income/education levels within racial categories, it’s possible for statisticians/criminologists/economists to measure the effect of race on crime rates while controlling for education/income (using multivariate statistics). When these experts do so, they find “basically” what I detailed earlier= major causal factors of crime are linked to age/sex/income/education and not race.
First, I am versed in these statistical findings and how they are used by criminal justice experts. Second, you cannot remove race from this discussion entirely, for you admit that they are tied to income/education. Third, remember, statistics are just that – the same statistics can be used to argue one side of an argument and those same statistics may be used to argue the other side.
Re: anon 2:40
You can and should remove race from it because “race” is a stupid concept anyway. Poverty and lack of education cause crime, not skin. The reason kids from one poor DC neighborhood take guns to a wealthy one — and not the other way around — has nothing to do with race. So stick to good old fashioned snobbery (what are these hoodlums and poors doing in our fair neighborhood, Giles?) and no one can call you racist.
You honestly don’t understand that people identify, culturally, by their race? Are you Stephen Colbert or do you just imitate him and not realize he’s joking?
Interestingly, we tend to be more comfortable identifying/categorizing individuals by race than class. I would suppose that is because most are more likely to have a poor family member–or one may have been poor at some point in her/his life–rather than someone of a different race and find difficulty relating to those who are not as closely familiar.
Correlation is usually expressed as r, not r-squared. R-squared represents explained variance of a given statistical model, not correlation.

As far as racism is concerned i am the first person to say I
Have worked under and been educated by numerous
Individuals who happened to be black; all of whom I have nothing but the greatest respect for. I in no way would say that someone should be judged on their skin color alone, THAT is racist. Judging someone basedon the image they make a conscious choice to project is quite another. Ignorog a legitimate trend in crime in a particular area of he city because the individuals commuting the crimes happened to be of minorities is irresponsible. And as for the IRA comment the statistical correlation between comes commuted by the Ira versus overall come isnt nearly as strong.
And I agree that DC is becoming an increasingly wealthy and educated city and I totally in favor of educated and upstanding citizens of ANY race living here. But I think those who are commuting crimes should be held accountable for their actions no
Matter their age or race demographic.
Why should anyone be concerned about the city being safer for you OP? IOW, what’s with this trend of boasting a shameless self-centeredness while begging for sympathy for it?
For all those wondering if it was an act of teens where race may or may not have been involved, the other account to this was that this was the result of an argument for the liquor store that was being renovated, which might imply less of a racial component than just disagreeing over something?
real estate is such a contentious issue in these parts.
any update on the poor soul that was found dead in the alley behind P St? Related or separate incident?
Re: the man found in the alley – MPD says:
“Yesterday mpd was called for an adult male in the alley who was unconscious….he was taken to the medical examiners office
Preliminary appears to be a natural death but awaiting medical examiners determination”
That is to say, a spy was killed and it was made to look like it was a natural death…
race/stats – whatever, when you see the IRA blow up a pub you don’t say ‘those white people are so violent’ – when you see a corrupt executive wallstreet executive arrested you don’t say ‘those white people are so greed’ – wanna see the breakdown of race amongst inside traders? but you see a black teen arrested and you say ‘blacks have problems’ – think about that
Ignoring a culture of violence does nothing. Of course saying “black people are violent” is worthless and racist, but unfortunately PoP and others commonly chastise and block people who simply want to address the reality of the situation which includes the fact a hugely disproportionate number of perpetrators are black males.
Attributing this violence to a racial/ethnic culture is racist. Look at the prior comment. The culture is not the ethnicity. There is wall street culture and backalley street culture.
The dispute about rennovations seems weird. Did I miss something? Are armed teens getting into tussles over floor plans? No. There just seems to be more crime in that area lately.
I probably called 911 twice in the 20 years before 2012 and I’ve already had to call three times this year to report crimes (usually thefts or robberies) that I’ve seen or suffered.
Somewhere between Lanier and Gray things aren’t working. Most of us peasants probably can’t do anything about it, but the money behind all the new 14th street condos and Evans’ backers in the neighborhood might be more persuasive to our sympathetic, attentive leaders?
One article about the shooting:
http://www.intowner.com/2012/07/14/mid-afternoon-gunshots-ring-out-at-17th-corcoran-sts-nw-%E2%80%93-sat-july-14/
too back the citizens couldn’t be armed too…

I have to say, in a case like this, I LOVE that the cops got one of them, recovered the guns, and that citizens came to help. And, I wholeheartedly support the idea of waterboarding the kid they caught until he gives up the names of the other kid, or just tying each of his limbs to four different horses and then setting off firecrackers in his navel until he talks.
