The crape myrtles seem to be loving the hot weather – they’re in full effect all over town. From Petworth above and Capitol Hill below.

Crepe Myrtle trees! I’ve been admiring their pink blossoms over the past few days but had no idea what kind of tree they were. They really seem to love the heat.
Actually, it’s crape myrtle with an a
Actually, it can be spelled either way.
+1. The more common spelling is with an “a,” but both are acceptable. See:

If you’re going to publicly correct someone’s spelling, be right.
I’m so not a pink person at all but I’m sorta digging this scene…I’m not normally into matching your house to your tree or vice-versa but like I said, I’m actually sorta digging the scene.
I CANNOT get mine to bloom — any advice? It bloomed in 2010 but not last year and so far not this year.
They tend to grow on new wood only. You can prune it lightly the year before you want it to bloom, but I find that practice to be kind of violent, in most cases. If it’s an old crape myrtle, it may not bloom anymore, or rarely.
That being said, I like them alright, but there’s way too many of them, and they’re not native trees. I’d rather have dogwoods and redbuds for flowering trees.
I love my crape myrtle tree (the bark and flowers are beautiful) but I hate the mess it makes.
