Sorry there was a glitch in the commenting yesterday:

“Dear PoPville,

Any good bar recommendations for watching the State of the Union? (Particularly in the H Street area?)”

For H St, NE – where do you think would be the best spot – Argonaut (1433 H St NE)? Smith Commons upstairs (1245 H St, NE)? Star and Shamrock (1341 H St, NE)? The Big Board (421 H St NE)?

How about elsewhere in the city? Anyone hear of good specials?

And here’s a list of street closures from DDOT:

  • I’lll be stuck at home alone watching all by my lonesome. Bring beer!

So cute, my 3 year old calls it the “Barack Obama Flag” & I just love it.

  • “The Big Board” is closed Tuesdays, so: not there.

  • About the State of the Union:
I don’t watch in public – I have to be at home where I can have the remote in hand, ready to channel surf away when it gets too much. That’s not a partisan statement; it’s been true for me for years, regardless of who’s in office. This one could be worse than usual though – the election is not for ten months; I am in no mood for a full-blown campaign speech yet.

And whatever one thinks of Reagan, I regret that he turned the speech into a show & tell moment – who’s in the gallery? I don’t care.

  • All four Busboys locations are having watch parties. I know it’s not on H Street, and I don’t know about specials, but they generally draw a pretty chill crowd (and the food is fantastic.)

  • Ventnor Sports Bar (on 18th) has a viewing party and does a jello shot special during the SOTU, when the POTUS says a particular word or phrase.

  • At first I thought the pic for this post was a clever take on Obama and the unemployment measure U1 (Persons unemployed 15 weeks or longer, as a percent of the civilian labor force). Clearly, I am a huge data (and Scrabble) nerd.

  • Smith Commons will be open and showing the address. Great drinks and food. good crowd.. Come on by!!!

  • Boundary Stone is airing it too… I’m in agreement with Independent… Political afterthoughts at a bar would end me either in handcuffs or on a gurney…

  • Do other cities have SOTU watch parties or is this a DC thing? Not a rhetorical question – I’ve never watched one anywhere else.
