Rant: One of the people who works at the cafe in our building at work always runs around when there are only 2 patrons like she has too much to do, and therefore always has a really sour attitude and treats people like crap. When she’s not taking care of the patrons, she just stands in a corner with a really angry look on her face. It’s just a really crappy start to the day when I have to encounter it all of the time.

Rave: There is no one in the office today, making it super quiet. It’s nice to be able to get some work done without too many distractions!

    • LOL that sounds like a co-worker of mine at a retail store I used to work at. LOL she would always scowl at people with her arms crossed. Some people are simply in dead end jobs, victims of poor life choices and full of regret.

  • rant: Monday is certainly not my favorite day. Whoever came up with this 5 day work week, 2 days off, is such BS!

rave: My boss is out starting tomorrow, then we have a 3 day weekend!

rave/rant: i have two cigarettes left in my pack. i think after i finish them, i’m going to slap on a patch, and be done with them. *crossing fingers*

  • Rant: Remembering passwords- wouldn’t it be awesome if any time a password was asked of you, the site would remind you what their stupid specifications are? Like it has to have a number or a symbol, or 6 letters…
Rave: Awesome weekend- went to the barn twice, visited with friends, went to a museum, got in some great bike rides, saw a great movie… I am so happy to finally be able to relax in my city and enjoy the weekend!

  • Rant: Seeing the numerous satellite TV dishes hooked up to the public housing at Potomac Gardens. Really? Perhaps we need to re-evaluate who exactly is getting public housing in this city.
Rave: New ramekins for making creme brulee and chocolate molten cakes!

    • I guess they need something to do while at home all day.

    • The barrier between network tv and dish, ~$50 – $60, is much smaller than the barrier between public housing and renting market value. I just hope they don’t deign to shop at Giant because that would just be flaunting it.

    • How awful! Those dastardly low- income folks spending $3 a day on entertainment options for their families. Let them eat CAKE instead! Scratch that – no cake… Since THEY have no ramekins… And of course lacking cable and Internet will only further the ‘digital divide’.

      • So you’re suggesting that if you’re poor enough to live in decrepit public housing, there’s nothing better for you to spend $720 a year on than television? Hmmm. I can think of a lot of things, including education, music lessons for your kids, etc… Look, people have the right to complain about this because we’re paying for it with our taxes. I work full time and attend school, and I can’t “afford” satellite TV. Tell me again why I’m paying for my neighbors to do this? If I was in Potomac Gardens, I’d be concentrating on getting out, not watching the latest reality TV. Priorities, people! And that is my rant. Thank you.

        • A couple of things to consider: many people who live in public housing have jobs, and get to spend their income on things they feel will be of benefit to their families. TV programs can be educational as well as entertaining, and may serve to keep youngsters who can’t afford music lessons and sports programs at home and supervised — in my opinion, worthy things. And, of course, the price of a year’s worth of cable is nowhere close to being enough to make up the difference between market rate rents and subsidized rents in the area.

    • Would you share your chocolate molten cake recipe? Also, can it be baked in a pyrex glass ramekin? Can those pyrex ramekins even go in the oven? Thanks

Rant: Forgot to replenish my tea supply at work. It’s gonna be a long cranky day.

Rave: Game tonight! Geaux LSU beat Bama (again)!

  • Rant: Censorship
    Rant: Shining shoes
    Revel: Shined shoes
    Revel: Clean, unwrinkled, blue tie

  • Rave: Got so much accomplished this weekend. Even had a chance to go out for dinner with friends and see a movie.

Rant: By the time it was time to relax and enjoy the weekend, it was 9 pm on Sunday. :/

  • Rant: On New Years Day I broke things off with a guy I’d been seeing for about 2 months. Now I’m wondering if I made the wrong decision…..

Rave: Planning a trip to the Keys this month!

    • Well- my bf of 4 months broke it off with me right after NYE as well. And, I’m wondering if he’s regretting it!

    • My wife and i broke up several times when we were dating. It was a necessary part of getting to a strong committed relationship. However, one caveat is that we had other options (not saying you don’t), so getting back together was not based out of loneliness but of a realization that there was something there. I think a lot of people get back together because they have nothing else going on at the time. Kind of an easy solution to wanting to have a date again on Saturday night.

  • Rave: Beautiful weekend. I worry about the lack of rain, but that’s the Californian in me.

Rave: The Lincoln Theater is a wonderful place to see a movie. Opulent surroundings, generous seating, very reasonable prices. To those who complained about the sound, they either fixed the problem or I didn’t notice. Girl With the Dragon Tattoo does have a lot of bass in the soundtrack, the actors are a bit mumbly, and the dialogue goes so fast that it would be hard to pick up even in a different theater. Bottom line: it’s wonderful to have this in the neighborhood. I will see any halfway decent movie here just to keep it as an option.

Rant: The BRONCOS??? I’m still flabbergasted.

Rave: Unexpectedly re-contacted by an old flame. Please please please say he’s trying to get back together…

Rant: Was signed up for a chocolate walking tour on Saturday but the tour guide never showed up!
Rave: Boyfriend and I went to Churchkey for a quick bite instead then spent the rest of the day walking around the city – the weather was just perfect for strolling!

    Rant: Monday.
Rave: Four day week, then a four day weekend.

  • RAVE: it is my birthday, I feel like i should be more happy…
RANT: it is too early to said but I am pretty sure that the new guy in my life forgot my bday, although I mentioned that twice in the last 2 weeks :( What do I do, wait till the day is over? or?
RAVE, already received many bday wishes
RAVE, cant wait for my bday celebration on FRI

    • happy birthday!!! as for the guy, don’t sweat it. if you want to get bday well wishes from him then message him in a cute/funny/bantering way about how it’s your bday. some people just don’t make space in their brains for things like birthday dates. have the best day!!! seriously, cheer up, it’s your effin’ birthday!!

    • happy bday to you!

    • First of all, Happy Birthday!

      Regarding the guy:
      1) For goodness sake, it’s not even noon. Plenty of hours left in the day.
      2) Not sure how new the new guy is (or if it even matters), but give him a pass on the first birthday. If he hasn’t figured out that birthdays are important to you by the next one, then dump him. :D

      • Oh, and I disagree with horseshoe’s advice about messaging him in a “cute/funny” way about how it’s your birthday. To me that would come across as needy, attention-seeking, or something equally unattractive.

        • Depends on the person and delivery, I suppose. I know plenty of people who can get away with stuff like that and plenty who couldn’t if their life depended on it. My amendment should be that you don’t do anything you’re not completely comfortable with for heaven’s sake! And I do agree with gdopplerxt’s first point. It’s still early. Good thing, too, more of your bday to enjoy.

    • Please update this and let us know if he comes through. As someone that has forgotten birthdays in the past, I am rooting for this guy to come through.

  • Rant: The sales at Penn Camera were not as good as I had hoped.
Rave: Made a trip out to Great Falls yesterday and it was very pretty.
    Rant: Homeworrrrrk.

  • Rant: People bitching about having to go to work when you’re unemployed.

Rave: Reading PoP from home. Gonna go walk the dog and grab a beer with lunch.

  • Rant: Stood in line for over an hour to get tickets for GALA Theater’s Epiphany event yesterday only to find out there were no more tickets! There has got to be a more efficient way to distribute tickets. First you had to stand in a line outside, then stand in a line inside that went up 3 flights of stairs. We were standing still for about 15 minutes, on the staircase, when other people coming down the stairs told us there were no more tickets. No one from GALA seemed to be informing the 100+ people still waiting in line that they were wasting their time.
RAVE: At least the weather was nice!

    • Why don’t they use their ticket booth? How does one even know when an event is going on there. Has anyone been to a show there? I would love to hear about it.

  • Rant: The scary kids all in black that I had to walk by on my way home from Looking Glass late Saturday night.

Rave: At least they didn’t have their guns out or ski masks on.

  • Rant: Just realized race season is approaching and I need to drop some pounds!…goodbye beer for a couple months. :-(

Rave: Will enjoy a final beer while watching the all-SEC championship game!

  • Rant: A guy collapsed in the gutter at 13th and Columbia with no shoes or socks on and several couples just walked by him until my boyfriend and I stopped, asked if he was ok, and called 911. Shame on them. It seriously pissed me off how many people didn’t stop.

Rave: A guy driving (who we think might have been an off duty cop) stopped and stayed with us until the paramedics arrived. He also called MPD to get them out as well.

Rave: Our city paramedics are professional and kind.

  • Rant: People who give you attitude at work when they’re supposedly in a position that is supposed to help you handle things out of your realm of work.

Rave: Awesome co-workers who can bypass those people.

Rave: Caught the worm this morning with an early rise this AM feeling well-rested.

  • Rant: Walked into the house from a great party and my radiators were ice cold. Turns out my 4 year old furnace had sustained earthquake damage from the summer. I knew my old house swayed but damn. Makes me wonder what else is out of line.

Rave: Fortunately I had a maintenance contract, the repairman came the next day and the weather wasn’t super cold so the furnace shutoff wasn’t catastrophic.

  • Revel: After 9 weeks with the consumption-grunk-cold plaquing my every moment, I finally have almost kicked it. Nothing like eating fresh garlic and multiple daytime naps to fight the evil bacterial infection from hell.

  • Rant: My boyfriend went back to school across the country this morning.

Rave: Had a great week/weekend with him- saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (very confusing, but intriguing), got brunch, took a long walk down 14th from T to the Mall, went shopping, and cooked some yummy dinners.

Rave: Sore throat that worried me last night seems to have disappeared. Tea+soup+massive amounts of orange juice seems to be my personal panacea.

Rave: Finally making moves at work…hoping it amounts to some upward mobility

  • Rave: Found out I might be going to Tanzania next week for work
Rant: None at all. Best Monday in a long time!

  • Rave: The Mayor finally chimes in on the senseless gun violence that is so common in our communities of color in DC — “Come on ladies and gentlemen. It is time for us to be able to end this kind of tragic violence in our society.”

Rant: The Mayor should have a bill introduced to dramatically increase the penalties for children in this city that are repeat violent offenders and especially if they are in possession of gun or have done any type of gun crime. 15 years and out by 35 for a known 1st degree murder just by pleading guilty to second degree just is lame.

  • Kalorini

Rant: Migraine with a fun light show this morning, paired with a bad night’s sleep last night. C’mon Excedrin!

Rant: My living situation seems sour right now and I don’t know how to make it better (I love all my two- and four-legged roommates–I just hope we’re in a funk and there isn’t something else going on)

Rave: Have some fun after-work outings planned with friends from different circles this week.

  • Rave: Got my PoP T-shirt this weekend. Next I must make it a priority that this t-shirt travels the globe.

Rant: An unusually high, even for Columbia Heights, amount of garbage in the neighborhood this weekend. Come on people, respect yourselves and your community.

  • Rave: I dont even watch football that much but the Broncos/Steelers game last night was great!
Rave: People at work understanding that it is not appropriate to ask super personal questions. (Example: When was the last time you had sex?)
Revel: Made some Jamaican curry chicken and rice and peas last night and it was deeeelish!
Rant: Dramatic neighbors who argue and scream and cry loudly in the hallways at 3 in the morning. I didn’t know male roommates could be so dramatic.
Revel: I’m alive, employed, loved and full of a yummy breakfast of cheese grits and scrambled eggs with spinach, onions, bell peppers and chicken sausage. OK now I need a nap.

    • If you ever leave your job, you will have to post where you work. The world (or PoPville) must know.

      • If I ever get a chance to make it to one of the Happy Hours I will reveal all.
I so want to blog about this place but I will get fired over that, its a constant shit show.

  • Rant: Noticed a run in my hose (yes, sadly, hose) at 9 a.m., which now stretches all the way down my leg.

Rave: Had an overall awesome weekend! Lots of time with friends, No Pants metro ride (but pants on), got to hang out with a new friend one-on-one. But not much time to relax so I’m still tired!

Rant: Boyfriend works 6 days this week. Actually, days AND nights. No chance to see him, or really even talk to him, until lunch on Friday. This has been going on for too long and I’m tired of it.

Rave: Friend’s b-day happy hour at Zengo tonight! Mmm, Zengo…

  • Rave: Had such a great time on safari–what an awesome way to spend my last weekend in Uganda. Met some great people, got a ton of pictures, and didn’t get mauled by the errant hippo that wandered into our camp Friday night.

Rave: This time next week I’ll be back in DC!

  • Revel: Snow

  • Rave: Working from home and watching it flurry. This weather is so fucked up.

Rant: Macrodantin. Side effects include super dry mouth and loss of appetite. I have lost three pounds this week and I don’t want to — based on this crazy drug. Sigh, it has helped make me feel a lot better, but to this for 30 days!?

  • Rave: Despite being unbelievably busy at work right now, I managed to relax and actually enjoy my weekend without thinking about work most of the time. This is a new skill for me and I love it!

Rave: My sister’s dog that has been sick since before Thanksgiving is on some new medication that seems to be helping.

  • Rave: Everyone needs to CALM the EFF DOWN today. Including me.

  • Cool tour of the newly fixed up Peirce Mill this weekend, the big gears down in the basement are neat. I wish I were a park ranger sometimes.
