Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo by PoPville flickr user Laura_Grageda

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

On this erev Yom Kippur (eve of day of atonement) I’d like to take the opportunity to apologize. I genuinely try to do the best I can to make this a place where honest and open conversation can take place. Sometimes we talk about simple things and sometimes we talk about serious and controversial topics. As moderator there are times I make mistakes. On occasion comments get deleted that shouldn’t be and sometimes comments get through that cross the line. That line is very hard for me to identify at times. Sometimes it is simply logistically not possible to read everything. But I want you to know that I do recognize that at times people get offended. And I want you to know that I recognize that I make mistakes. For that I am truly sorry.

I apologize to any who have been offended this year and I promise to try harder in the coming year to make this a respectful place where we can discuss tough topics. Despite the difficult times we will surely face and the controversial topics we will surely debate, I also promise to not forget to appreciate the beautiful life.

  • Rant: The building that I live in will be sold by the end of the year

Rave: Will have the opportunity to purchase my unit at a discounted price or take the buyout

Rant: Not enough money, even with the buyout, to buy my unit

Question: Does anyone know how the buyout process works with taxes, is it taxed as capital gains?

    rant: murder by my house
rave: sprouted gomphrena in my attic greenhouse!

    • Since it was a ‘Rave’ I will say congratulations about the gomphrena… although it sounds like a disease to should offer condolences over. (“Did you hear about ANdy? His gomphrena sprouted, poor guy.)

      • Haha thanks for this – made me LOL for a good 30 seconds. Needed that!

        • andy

Yeah, there is that. And man, does it itch!

I was testing out whether the seeds I picked up off the sidewalk below a big public planting of gomphrena ‘fireworks’ would sprout next spring. Looks like they will!

  • How’s L’il Ern the flying dachshund?

Rant: Work this week was hellish and next week is only going to be worse.
Rave: Four day weekend starting today so I don’t have to think about it for a while!

Rant: Intended to stay up last night to see a friend who gets off work late, but passed out shortly after ten.

Rave Going to take on so many cooking projects this weekend! Have a bunch of apples from apple-picking and jalapenos and basil from the garden – any suggestions? I’m thinking apple upside-down cake, candied jalapenos, and fig pesto . . .

  • Rant: My best friend is driving me crazy. All day long, she complains to me, talks smack about our other friends to me, or acts like the world’s biggest know-it-all. When I bring up something I want/need to talk about, she changes the topic so that we’re talking about her again. I call her out on occasion, but I just don’t have the energy to call her out on it every single day.

Rave: Other friends who keep me sane! And the invisible setting on gchat 🙂

    • I hear ya! My best friend does that too.

    • I hate sappy sayings that are mostly drivel. However, when I lived with my sister during college she posted “Life is a Theater” on our fridge and, well, it stuck with me.

Ironically, in the past few years I’ve been pushing her and her crazy drama into a back row.

    • Mine did too – DID. In my opinion, friendships are much like relationships – sometimes you need a break, or even a breakup. It wasn’t easy “breaking up” with her, but when she retaliated by talking dirty about me on facebook and screaming in my face during the awkward encounters in the weeks following the “breakup”, I knew I had made the right decision.

It’s been over a year now and I don’t have that drama around me anymore.

You may not want to break up with your friend, but honestly, what would you do if this were your significant other? Would you put up with this type of behavior? Talk to her and see where it goes…

      • Emmaleigh504

Agreed. Sometimes it’s harder to break up with a friend than a SO, but sometimes it’s best for everyone.

        • breaking up with a friend is almost worse than breaking up with a boyfriend…

          • Emmaleigh504

I had 1 horrible friend break up that was worse than any breakup with a boyfriend I ever had. But let’s face it, break ups are not usually very fun no matter who you are breaking up with.

  • Rant: WTF Metro?
Rave: I got to work, it’s a 3 day weekend, next weekend I am going to Ontario for 4 days, and then I have a job interview (possibly more than one). And it’s Friday!

  • Rant: The way I am treated at work. I am currently detailed to perform a specialized task within my department and am doing a damn fine job. Coworkers and the majority of supervisors recognize the excellent job I am doing. They are in the process of making my detail permanent, but there is one person who has expressed interest in the position, but is simply not qualified. That person feels that having a master’s degree makes her more qualified. We were both initally hired to do the same job and only a bachelor’s degree was required. More power to her for having a master’s, but I was working full time in my choosen field my senior year of college. There was simply no need to continue my studies. I have over 6 years of experience and a certification in the field while this person has neither. She has been with the agency for half the time I have.

Rant: This person actually has backing from two of our officials thanks to neopotisim. I am fed up with blatant discrimination and favoritism.

Rave: I know as the most qualified person that I will triumph in the end. Hopefully.

    Rave: Four day weekend.

  • Rave: 3 day weekend, 3 day week, Memphis next weekend!
Rave: This weather, fall colors, apple picking, carving pumpkins with my neice this weekend.
Rave and Rant: Nervous as hell about the Phillies tonight!
Rave: This blog – thanks for being a great way to connect to our city.

  • Revel: Hockey season started yesterday!!!!

  • Rave: Quit my job this week!

Rant: Nervous about new job, hope it works out okay.

Rave: PoP. I love your blog, it gets me through my week!

  • Rave: It is GORGEOUS outside, and will be all weekend!

Rant: My AL baseball team lost, and a player from my NL baseball team was publicly rooting for my AL team on Twitter. (I secretly think he might be a dick, even if he is going to be the best offensive thing ever for the Nats.)

  • Revel: One of my friends got a job! She got her MA back in May, and has been job hunting since then. She wouldn’t have even known about the job had I not sent her the listing, because it wasn’t widely advertised. Yay!

Revel: I made gingerbread (in loaf form) last night, and my apartment still smelled wonderful from it this morning! I love fall!

Revel: This blog! Thank you for all you do!

    No rants…it’s a good Friday! 🙂

  • Rave: My Tigers are going to the ALCS!!!!

  • austindc

Rave: Learned a lot at Common Good City Farm workshop.

    Rave: Poached eggs for breakfast.

Rave: PoP has never offended me. I just like chatting about our city. Keep it coming man.

Rave: Seeing my sister this weekend and touring a brewery together. We got a lot of drunken catching up to do.

Rant: My water bottle smells funny.

    • austindc

Not sure if this is a rant or rave, but for some reason I was lying in bed last night trying to list as many PoP tags as I could off the top of my head. Kind of like counting sheep.

  • Rave: The DC DMV!!! Seriously, I had issues about an out of state ticket and DC DMV called me about not having sent in the proper paperwork. They are giving me extra time to get them the paperwork (which is taking longer because Ohio sucks). AND, she was SUPER nice and helpful on the phone! I know the DMV has its issues, but today I think they rock! Thank you Shamika at the DC DMV!

Rant: Ohio state government and their inability to live in this century.

    • Revel/Rant: Thank you for mentioning other state governments! You totally reminded me that I need to mail in my paperwork back to the South Dakota state government (again)–this is the second time in 2 years that they’ve tried to call me for jury duty…I haven’t lived there in almost TEN years. *facepalm*

    • The DC DMV truly is excellent. I wish their counterparts in VA had even 10% of their competence and professionalism.

    • I second this rave! My in-person experience is mostly with the SW DC DMV center, and they’ve always been helpful, quick, and pleasant. And whoever answers the phone when you call the customer services line is equally incredible. Huge thumbs up for the DC DMV!

  • Rave: Free Coffee and Donuts at work.
Rant: Fasting since midnight for knee surgery take two at 5PM. I’m hungry!
Rave: Phils tonight (hope I’m lucid by then!) and hopefully a big yummy dinner and dessert :-D!

  • rave: FRIDAY

    rave: october

rant: my boss. why can’t he respond to e-mails or do something for ME that I need in order to do MY job, yet if I were to ignore him the way he does me, I would be fired, or written up or god knows what. How can he get away with this shit?

  • revel: in love! ::swoon::

revel: feeling like a lucky lady because my husband made me poached eggs–on a weekday morning. wow.

revel: train trip with best friends to see best sister-in-law in the world.

revel: productive work day already; remembering there are really intelligent and passionate people here.

revel: warm sunshine on a cool fall friday morning. doesn’t get better than that.

    revel: the wonders of vermicomposting!

revel: no complaints. one of those days where i feel truly blessed.

  • Annoyed with this lady in my office. She comes in late and leaves early, and then she’s always complaining about how much work she has to do and acts like she’s the only one in the office that has actual work. And then she’s always doing her personal errands during work hours. blah!

  • me

Rant: Just got out of the ER. Damn kidney stones.

Rave: Not working today, so I guess this makes it a 3-day weekend after all. Plus, my kitties are doing a good job of snuggling and taking care of me. 🙂

    • Hope you have great pain meds! Have had them myself, and know how crippling they can be. There’s no better feeling than that first wash of pain medication in your IV at the hospital. 🙂 Take care of yourself!

    • houseintherear

oh lord. I haven’t had a stone in about 2 years, but I remember the feeling– 🙁 hope you feel better soon.

  • Rant: Rejection
    Rant: Being single
    Rant: Fall
Rant: My birthday, Thanksgiving,Christmas, and NYE coming up
    rant: Dying old,lonely, and barren

    • Hey guess what?

One of my friends (in her 20s) was just diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer.
Another one of my friends totaled his car in an accident and he’s being sued by the other party.
Somebody else I know is a raging alcoholic and on the verge of divorce, so he probably won’t see his 1-year old very often.
And one of my colleagues is having a very hard time managing a chronic illness and caring for her elderly mother who has dementia.

      You’re welcome for the perspective.

      • didn’t mean for that to sound so snarky. sorry I couldn’t get a friendlier tone across, but I just meant for you to take a step back. 🙂 being coupled isn’t really a worthy goal in and of itself.

        • I think that snark was 100% called for and well done. Jonesy needs a little perspective. Being single isn’t terrible when you learn to love yourself and enjoy it.

      • houseintherear

Yep. Steve Jobs’ speech, which we all heard 3209837043 times yesterday, had an actual impact on me… perspective changes everything. When you get down in the dumps, force yourself to get some perspective.

        • The snark wasn’t called for. Everyone on here get to B and M about how they feel. I should get the same respect. I watch my mom and my sister die right before my eyes. I’m alone in a city of strangers. I don’t like being single. I have no family left that cares if I live or die, no friends,my boyfriend dumped me,and I’m getting to old to have children. so my life is pretty miserable right about now. My relationship was VERY important to ME because that was all I had. It’s nice that everyone had such enlightenment while they were single, but that hasn’t been the case for me. It’s nice feeling like there is someone in the world that cares about me, I miss that, so I’m ranting about it.

          • Im sorry to hear how things are going for you. As someone who can say they have felt that before and been at the bottom of the barrel for years before catching a glimpse of sunshine, I promise, it gets better.

Try volunteering and giving your time. Never understimate the impact you can make on the world. You never know who is counting on you! Good luck!

          • Sorry to hear about all of that.

            Have you tried online dating?

Have you tried wearing revealing clothing and going to nearby bars, coffee shops grocery stores etc?

Have you talked to a psychiatrist?

    • Emmaleigh504

Deathswitch.com, so when you die alone (like I prolly will) the computer will contact someone so your cat doesn’t eat your face off. Seriously, I have this just so my cat doesn’t eat my dead body and the neighbors don’t have to complain about a smell only to find my rotting body.

Other than that, I’m ok with be single. I hope things get better for you, I know single can suck.

Also, my single aunt adopted a kid in her mid (late?) 40s, so if you really want kids, it’s difficult but doable. Hang in there.

  • Rave: Anthro! Anthro! Anthropologie!

    Rant: I’m already broke

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: No clue what to get my mother for her birthday that is fast approaching.

Rant: My sister got my mother a fabulous gift.

    Rave: Long weekend!

  • saf

“I also promise to not forget to appreciate the beautiful life. ”

That’s important, and I appreciate hearing it. Thank you for reminding us to appreciate it.

  • Today is my birthday, and no one remembered. Well, my husband prompted the kids to say “happy birthday”, but didn’t say/ do anything himself. Except remind me to find some documents for his mother.

The birthday party I’m throwing myself will be sad. I keep getting emails from friends who can’t make it. I have two people who said outright they will come, and another 2 or 3 who “will try”.

    • Happy Birthday! Sorry things aren’t working out just right today, but here’s hoping your next year is a good one. 🙂

    • houseintherear

yuck. 🙁 i’m sorry. been there.

    • i hope that the friends who show up tonight are the best ones, and that you have a lovely birthday despite the rough start. and if today isn’t great, i’m all about giving yourself an extension until a great day rolls around!

  • sorry to hear that. you should go out and buy yourself something pretty.

  • Rave – grown men walking down the sidewalk eating frosted gingerbread man cookies.
