Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo by PoPville flickr user pablo.raw

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this week?

Thanks to Pablo.Raw for sending this great photo over after we admired a building at the McMillan Reservoir yesterday.

    Revel: Le Weekend

  • Rant: My partner and I fell in love with a house this week, but were outbid by four other people.

Rave: It’s not raining. Two weeks after contracting the flu I’m finally feeling mostly healthy again. And my dog is back to her old self after picking up a nasty infection ($700 later!).

    • I know the feeling (your rant). We went through the same, but something better ended up coming along a week later and it was for the best in the end…

      Rave: getting new windows

  • Rant: Can’t find anything online about whether DC USA offers overnight parking and if so, what is the rate.

Rave: I’m getting my hair done today, which makes me feel pretty (at least until I have to style it myself).

    • I actually asked PoP this exact question during the Snowpocalypse – here’s what he sent me:

The District (which owns the garage) has just approved a monthly parking program so that one can buy a monthly space for $145/month. Interested persons should contact Central Parking Manager, Deresse Kedu during the day at 202- 253-4938 for further questions. Currently, the only restriction on the Monthly pass is that the garage is closed between 1 AM and 5 AM, so we don’t permit access to the garage during those 4 hours of time.

The other option for weekend or overnight parking is the hourly rate schedule. 4-12 hours of parking costs $12, and over 12 hours costs $20. But, again, your reader can check with Mr. Kedu about the exact amount of time they need to park.

In terms of the other current parking rates, they are as follows as of 2/1/10:

      0-1 Hour – $1.50
      1 – 2 Hours – $3.00
      2 -3 Hours – $4.00
      3 – 4 Hours – $5.00
      4 – 12 Hours – $12.00
      Over 12 Hours – $20.00

      Monthly Parking – $145.
Early Bird Special Monday – Friday – If you arrive by 9 AM and are out by 7 PM, you pay $6.”

    • This week has been hell on my hair.

  • rant: I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth taken out yesterday. Although, it hasn’t been as bad as I expected.

Rave: Dr.Pital with Washington Oral Surgery- She is fantastic. She made a very unpleasant surgery at the very least tolerable. I can’t say enough good things about her…highly, highly recommend.

  • Last year at this time I was unemployed with no prospects, pretty depressed and feeling incredibly isolated, resentful towards my friends who had jobs, and embarrassed by my situation.

A year later I’m in a decent job, am celebrating six months dating an incredible woman, and I’m looking forward to seeing my Cincinnati Reds in the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. To say 2010 has turned out to be a pretty decent year is, thankfully, an understatement.

  • R.Pinhas at La Maison Française = insanely raveworthy.

  • Rant: Yesterday, most (but not all) of the electricity in my house went out and we couldn’t figure out why (tried flipping all the switches in the circuit breaker to no avail). Now, its mostly back on, but the bedroom lights are still out. This just doesn’t make sense to me! (Sidenote: does anyone have any idea how/why this would happen?)

Rant 2: Had to drive to BWI at 11 last night in the torrential rains; I could barely see the road.

Rave: My boyfriend got back from a business trip last night (hence the late drive to BWI).

Rave 2: Reservations at Cuba Libre tonight. I’m really excited both to try the new place on opening night AND to get 50% off!

Rave 3: Going apple-picking tomorrow and the weather should be absolutely perfect for it!

    • Is your house a recent flip? We had something like this, and the electrician said that a lot of flippers cut corners and don’t run the something wire to that whatsis box or something like that. Sorry I don’t remember/understand the details, but the basic story was that there was a connection missing which weakened the whole system. I also found it odd that most lights came back on, but a couple of fixtures didn’t. I used the opportunity to have the electrician replace a couple of really ugly home depot fixtures with something a little more to my taste.

    • You should probably shut off the electricity to your house and have an electrician come out today. Correctly installed electrical systems are incredibly robust and don’t just magically fail or behave flaky. Incorrectly done electrical can do all sorts of weird crap.

You may have a short in your electrical system which is an extreme fire hazard. Don’t dick around with a flaky electrical system. Spend the money to get it fixed immediately.

    • Need to change a breaker.Same thing happened to me yesterday too,

  • Rave: Looks like I have a phone interview today for a job that looks awesome. The position announcement looks like it was written with my resume in mind, and the comapny looks great.

Rant: Interviews always make me nervous!

  • rant: coworkers who are lazy and who leave work unfinished that I then have to fix/finish for them.
rave: I don’t have to come into work tomorrow and I’m looking for ideas for daytrips to escape the city – so far I’m thinking either Rennaissance Fest & Annapolis in MD or wine tasting in VA – anyone know of anything cool going on tomorrow outside the city?

  • Rave: fellow planned the romantic weekend away!! Cannot wait to frolick on the beach and then eat ourselves stupid on fresh, local seafood.

Also, I second kudo’s to NiceMarmot’s revel. Made me smile and appreciate even more that I’m two months into a great relationship with a fantastic beautiful adventurous wonderful fellow!

  • Bear

Rant: Broke up with the boyfriend. I love him, but the timing isn’t right. Pretty heartbreaking.

Rave: Well-timed trip home this weekend to see the new nephew.

    • I did the same in April. I was ready to commit to something and he wasn’t … and it was devastating because he thought I was awesome and vice versa. Someone said above that they got outbid for a house and it was for the ebst in the end. Same here. If I hadn’t stood up for what I wanted even though it broke my heart (temporarily), I would still be waiting around for him to figure his stuff out and I would never have met the awesome man I’m seeing now! Have fun with the family!

    • I feel your pain. My boyfriend broke up with me in July, b/c he felt that I wasn’t making the relationship a priority. He was ready to make big moves in the relationship and I was not. I felt bad at first, but realized we just had different needs/wants and different timelines. I truly hope he finds a woman that matches him better.

I think you will find someone too…when it is the right time. Good Luck!

      • I guess it’s the wrong day to rave about the girl I’ve been seeing and how amazing she is. 😉

        • Same here, PG (we should bring our girls to a PoP happy hour at some point, since I feel like we’ve dated in parallel through the R&R posts)!

Earlier this year, I dated someone who was going to be moving away for a job. I was ok with looking for work in her new city then moving to be with her, but she wasn’t ready for that or for long-distance. It sucked. But it worked out for the best.

          • ess, the funny thing is she’s someone I’ve known a long time and have been friends with. We skipped the awkward first couple of dates period and really hit it off right away. I remember you said before that you had a first date with a friend. Glad it’s working out for you!

  • Rave: The end of the USG fiscal year

Rave: Three day weekend, for the next three weekends

  • Rant: The Meridian Center has blocked off all of the parking on Belmont and Crescent between 16th and 17th for an event tonight. The ban starts at 4pm today, ie before most people get home from work, and was put into effect in a neighborhood where all the adjoining streets have Thursday/Friday street cleaning…so parking on Friday mornings is already tight. To top it off, they didn’t post the signs the required 72 hours in advance. Way to piss off the neighbors, Meridian Center. Not cool.

  • Rave: I really like my life. I (unlike pretty much all my coworkers) like my job, I have a really really great man, my dad survived a heart attack last week, and I have some truly fantastic friends. I am happy.

  • Rave: My wife is coming home from Nepal!

    Rant: Nothing in particular.

  • Rant: I am with Caroline! I go my hair done on Sunday, looked fab. On Monday and the rest of this week it was crap!

Rave: It is beautiful today, so hair looks great!
Rave: I live right next to the McMillan Resevoir and I love it. It is a great place to jog or get some air.

  • Rave: Wow, working out regularly really does make me a happier harder-working person.

Rave 2: Michael Bolton Album cover, couldn’t even make it 6 seconds, PoP.

Rant: A guy I was dating told me we had to stop seeing each other because he wants to run for mayor in 4 years and being seen with a white girl is bad for his image!!! True story.

  • rant: have to bake and decorate a wedding cake

rave: my son and daughter are both home for the week-end

    • I baked my first wedding cake a few months ago and it turned out fabulous. Have everything really well planned out and it should go smoothly. And let me know if you have any questions– I’d love to help a fellow Jersey Girl out!

  • Rave: Our french drain helped, no big water in the basement.

Rave: Autumn appears to have arrived in fine fashion.
