Garden of the Day

As previously noted, I’ve been on a quest to document all the great banana plants around town. Thanks to a reader for sending in this great specimen. He writes:

“Here are our two, in our backyard 400 block of Irving St NW. The mother died in the snow storms but not before giving birth to our twins!”

  • This is probably a dumb question, but did they survive last winter or are these new plants? I wouldn’t think a tree like this could take 4 feet of snow

  • These are new plants. The mother was a 7ft tree that is usually cut back to 6inches around Nov. and covered with mulch. However, the snow storms killed the mother, but not before shoots went out, were dormant and grew into these. That’s how in the wild you have banana “groves”
