Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

  • Rant: Seeing all the racism shrouded in anonymity on CraigsList.org’s “Rants and Raves” page, as well as all the blogs I’ve seen spouting everywhere that bash Black women, I’m depressed about the state of humanity. Not a good way to start my Monday.

  • GS: Never read CL’s R+Rs if you want to feel better about humanity. That place is a dark, dark den of despair.

Rave: Discovered Foodler this weekend. It might change my life.

Revel: Its freaking cold and barely snowing. Bring on a blizzard!

  • Rant: It’s Monday and I have no focus. Plus my office is freezing, so I keep re-heating my tea so as to keep my hands warm.

Rave: My boss leaves for a conference on Wednesday. Three beautiful bossless days! And it was snowing this morning!

  • Rave: Whenever I’m in a bad mood, mad at somebody, annoyed, whatever, I just say the words President Barack Obama and I get a smile on my face. It works every time. Or I look at the picture of him in the Oval Office, desk neat, white shirt on. He’s our president now. Thank you, Jesus!!! And the American electorate.

  • Rant: All the crazy people who are excited about snow instead of recognizing it as the cold disgusting mess it is.

Rave: It probably won’t stick? And if it does, maybe class will be cancelled!!!

  • RANT: I’m in such a good mood that I forgot to mention my rant: our heating bill for last cold month was $400.

  • I second anonymous in this rave: NO MORE TOURISTS!

Rant: There’s STILL a line at Ben’s — but then again, when is there not?

  • Rave: Finally, let it snow!

Rant: Must get milk, bread, toilet paper, must get milk, bread, toilet paper….

  • Golden Silence,
why are people bashing black women on craigslist?
My rant for today stems from this past Saturday. I was on 14th & Columbia RD. They had pictures of gunshot victims. Some guy ( a felon) was on a microphone preaching about stopping the violence. At one point, he said that things are good in DC now because we are down to ~180 murders per year versus 400 in the 80’s. Talk about having a defeatist attitude.

One of the women cops (Officer McKoy) there kept talking about having 6 years to retirement whenever I asked her for a solution to the problem. And the beat goes on. I asked her how many people she arrests for very small possessions of weed or crack. I’m talking joints or a hit of crack. She replied, “too many to count.” I asked her why she does this if this is not SERVING or PROTECTING. Her response? “I got 6 years to retire. I ain’t losing my job.” At that point, I realized how hopeless this situation is. Officers actually can get in trouble for exercising discretion and not taking someone to jail for possession of even the smallest amount of drugs. Amazing.

  • RANT: Everything.
    RAVE: Nothing.

  • Nate, on CraigsList there are racist rants about Blacks and other minorities in general. Certain people on Blogger have started anti-Black women blogs, which are mostly focused on trashing Black women who date interracially. They call Black women who date interracially “sellouts,” “nappy-headed,” and have stereotypical pictures of Black women on their pages.

Only one posts both on CraigsList and his own blog: Mr. Laurelton Queens. The hate he has towards Black women is incredible. His posts on CraigsList quickly get flagged and removed, but no matter how many times I and others have flagged his Blogger blog, that doesn’t get removed.

It’s scary to know that there are people out there who have such hatred!

  • Rant: I got to the front of the line at Au Bon Pain and they ran out of my soup. I am nervous and nauseous.

Rave: Possibility of the whole town going nutty in the snow tomorrow. Please let me be late to work.

Revel: One day no cigarettes and feeling fine.

  • Rave: Met the President and First Lady last week.

Rant: Got awful food poisoning after eating a salad at a chain coffee/food place.

Rave: Finally over the food poisoning.

  • Rant: I am so sick of the height restriction. I feel like I live in a glorified Bethesda.
Rant 2.0: I hate that there is a persistent lack of foot traffic in so much of the city.
Rant 3.0: Wisdom, the absinthe bar in Capitol Hill, is poorly managed.

Rave: DC was just named the best market for commercial and residential real estate investment in the world (Forbes Magazine), beating out London, NYC, and Tokyo, Paris, and Singapore. As a new homeowner in Shaw, this is good news to me.

Is there a relationship between my Rs&R? Maybe, but I failed Econ 101.

  • Rant: Just got owned by some hot-sauce and I am working on less than 3 hours of sleep.

Revel: I love hot sauce and I’ll happily dream of a great show last night when I finally nod off at my desk.

RAVE: i don’t think i would notice anything to rave about.

  • Rave: Shwarma King. Popped in randomly on Sunday. The people there are so nice! If all small biz owners could be like them. I got the chicken and they let me taste the fallafel (sp?). Yum!

  • Rant: Totally got my heart broken Saturday night. I was very deeply in love.

Rave: I get my quiet bed to myself and can be a slob if I want.

  • Rant: My dog eats poo. She ate half the kitty litter box last night.
Rave: Cats don’t eat poo. I love cats.

  • Anon 1:16, can you share more about Wisdom? I’ve been meaning to head over there to review for PoP, but I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews. I’ve been wondering if all the raves aren’t from Hill East folks happy to have an alternative to Trusty’s down that way.

  • Rant: Has anyone had their damned Christmas tree picked up by the city yet!?!!?!!

  • Rant: My tummy hurts and my job is killing me. Three more weeks of this crap!

Rave: At the end of said three weeks, my man is going to be here. Yippee!

  • Wow. Craigslist sounds like the stuff one sees on aol. And those comments can be very nasty!

  • Rave: Went to Sushi Ko and Red Derby for the first time this weekend.

Rant: Pissed that I waited so long to go to each, especially Red Derby as it is in walking distance!

  • Rant: This week has just begun and it is already sucking

Rave: Dodgeball tomorrow – some poor strangers are going to be on the receiving end of some serious rage!!!

  • @GeorgiaAve: I totally concur, I love cats!
Rave: We might get snow tomorrow!
Rant: If we get snow tomorrow, people will magically forget how to drive, the two plows DC owns will not get up our way and chaos will ensue!

  • Rant: I’ve already ranted once today, but I need to rant again. Boss just called me into her office to have a talk about all of the “restructuring” that’s going to happen. A big part of this is that I’m being forced from my office back into a cubicle…by the end of this week…which she didn’t even come out and tell me. Just said, “You’ll be on the third floor.” I really despise office politics. Before I was the person who couldn’t focus…now I’m just the person who doesn’t want to work for the rest of the day.

  • Kalia – I think a few weeks ago we were talking about some kittens near 7th and Upshur. Yesterday I helped a neighbor trap 2 kittens, one orange and one gray that had both black and orange stripes. We also trapped the cat we think is their mom. They went to a spay-neuter clinic today and will be released again in a few days. I think I remember you had a friend that was trying to catch one of the orange kittens. I haven’t seen the 2nd orange kitten in a few weeks so am hoping he has a new home and didn’t have something bad happen – do you know? Anyway, it looks like the two kittens will probably be released again because they are too old by now to be tamed very easily, but there are several people on 7th St who help to take care of them.

  • Vonstallin

How do you guys keep from traping the same cats?

  • well, if they get spayed/neutered and are feral cats (no one’s pet) they clip their ears…no good giving a cat the same operation twice!

But anyway, I hope the missing guy just got adopted. Lots of my neighbors have pet cats from that were stray kittens on this block, but there are lots of litters every year…hopefully less now 🙂

  • My cat is a former stray who was picked up after two kids repeatedly tried to feed him to a pit bull. Amazingly, he is the coolest and most dog friendly cat I have ever know. Gotta love the kitties (icanhascheezburger.com has made me laff for years now).

  • Rant: Too much stuff to do and not enough time. I feel like I need to take a day off from work just to take care of all the personal stuff I’ve been putting off.

Rant#2: Probably not getting a bonus this year nor a raise.

Rave: At least I still have a job (for now).

  • RANT: We just had to have one of our cats put down because she was really suffering. SHe had cancer and was 18 years old, but it still was sad. My tough guy husband cried.
RAVE: We have 3 more cats, one a Petworth alley stray that kept coming to our backyard and now is our indoor cat (got her checked out by a vet). My daughter is no longer embarrassed that her mother may be a crazy cat lady because 3 is respectable.

  • Rave: Got home to find my Christmas tree has finally been picked up.

  • I love Red Rock’s HH cheapass pizzaaaaaa!

Oh Ok I was just wondering.
My Alley is loaded with cats. I have to say that i only see about 5 now. use to be damn near 20+ when the cat ladie use to feed them 3 big cookie sheets of cat food. Somebody was always pregnant. Now that she is gone i dont see as many chillin on my car and taking a sh*t on my patch of dirt I call a drive way.

    Oh well…remember ya’ll….
    Love is a Battlefield….

  • rave: whew, obama did not give me a cold!
    rant: work still exists.

  • I don’t know, Wisdom had overpriced empanadas that were clearly microwaved from a box (and ruined). The absinthe was very expensive (11 dollars for half of a shot), and the waitress told me to shut the fu** up when I asked if the preparation required setting fire to the sugarcube (I really didnt know). Beautiful lounge with a lot of potential, but they need a manager that acts like they care. Also, considering the location and lack of foot traffic (see my rant), I don’t think it justifies those prices. Not worth the trip from NW (shaw, for me). Maybe a nice neighborhood hangout if you don’t need to refinance to afford it.

  • Rave: Black Moth Super Rainbow! Listen and melt away!

  • SM, that sounds like the group we saw that one night. One momma cat and 2 kittens! Good work!

and Vonstallin…that red wine and ketchup comment…kind of gross. just saying

  • I also love pussy…cats.

  • Interesting re Wisdom. I’m going to have to go down there. Admittedly, it’s not my usual kind of establishment, but I think it’s great that Hill East is getting more options. I love Trusty’s but sometimes you don’t want to go home smelling like the grill.
