Thanks to Jed and Olivia for passing on from Little Pearl:
“I am writing to inform you that we have decided to pause service at Little Pearl for 4 weeks starting May 10th in preparation for “Cicada Season”. As we tried to get as creative as possible to combat them this year, we know in good faith that a single 100 decibel cicada will ruin anyone’s dinner experience, a “tsunami” of them will be impossible to control. “Dear PoPville,
Hi neighbors! This will be my first experience with the influx of cicadas and wanted to hear any advice on prepping my garden? I completely redid my front yard 6 months ago (including new tree/shrubs/flowers) and heard while they do not eat plants, they can still destroy them.
A majority of us have cleaned up our yards with the new season and was wondering if anyone put netting on new plants in preparation? Some gardening sites have said to do so.”

“It begins… #cicadas
I was just vibing on our thin patch of backyard earth beneath an elm tree. All day long I’ve thought the birds were super animated and now I notice all these dime sized holes… I start poking around and found a few that haven’t been eaten. But there are easily 2 dozen holes.” Read More

My son and I were working compost deep into out little garden a few weeks ago in Mt Pleasant (where a plum tree once stood) and came across this dude. We think is a brood X late nymph stage? Read More
Yuri writes last week:
“We were walking through Fort Reno park and the grass was alive with emerging cicada nymphs. Here are some photographs of one that emerged an hour or two ago. These appear to be a different species than the ones that typically emerge in June/July.”
If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.
