Washington, D.C. 20011 Map

Event Info

Join us at Zeke’s Coffee for a talk titled “You Are Magic” by Petworth-based artist and illustrator Heidi Phelps.

Phelps’s work focuses on women of life and lore—exploring magic in ordinary moments, and everyday truths in myths and legends. Her influences include Aubrey Beardsley, Erté, Edward Gorey, Charles Addams, Victorian-era mourning costume and memento mori, Grimm’s fairy tales, Frida Kahlo and Marjane Satrapi.

Phelps’s illustrations have been archived by the Smithsonian Institution, and her upcoming tarot deck, the Black Violet Tarot, is set to be published worldwide by Rockpool Publishing and Simon & Schuster in June 2024.

During the talk, Phelps will offer a peek into her creative process, and discuss her personal piece titled “Peonies” which explores themes of loss, motherhood, and the enduring bonds between generations. The piece is a tribute to Phelps’s late mother, and evokes simultaneous emotions of joy and grief.

Phelps will host a Q&A following her talk.
