Thanks to Jason for sending: “This pretty hawk landed on the patio umbrella and surveyed the yard in Crestwood for breakfast. I think the likely target was a chipmunk or squirrel.”

“Dear PoPville,

I just saw and killed a spotted lanternfly at my office in the District. The link to report them to the D.C. government is here.

D.C. has information about spotted lanternflies and how to recognize them at their different life stages here. (I’d seen lots of photos of adults, and some photos/illustrations of egg masses, but I didn’t know until today what the two nymph stages look like.)

Please keep an eye out and report any spotted lanternflies or egg masses that you see. (When possible, please also squash the bugs and scrape egg masses).

Thanks to Kristen for sending from Bloomingdale: “Well, we knew we had a hawk visitor based on occasional “gifts” on our deck, and now we have proof. Spotted this guy (perhaps a juvenile red-tailed hawk) feasting on one of our local squirrels this morning. Would prefer he stick to rats but what can you do.”
