“Dear PoPville,

I keep seeing dead birds on the street. Not chickens or roosters, but regular birds. I live on Ogden and I see the dead birds on Center, Oak, and Hertford while I’m walking my dog. I keep wondering, is somebody with a bb gun shooting birds? Do they eat rat poison and fall out of the sky dead? Victims of low rainfall and high heat?”

Anyone else noticing an increase in dead birds around town? Any guesses as to the cause?

“Dear PoPville,

I woke up this morning to see what’s in the attached pictures. It looks like sawdust around the base of the tree and also some just inside the retaining wall of my front yard.

Do you think any of your readers may have an idea of what’s going on?”

Uh – oh, termites? Renegade mulcher? Anyone know for sure?

“Dear PoP,

I’m wondering whether any of your readers have insight into the eccentric storefront pictured in this photo, which is located at 12th and Pennsylvania SE, on the north side of Penn.”

In case folks can’t see from the photo – the window signs say, Yes We Respect ourselves, our mother, our father, our teachers, our friends.

NACOHHSS is:

The National Advisory Congress of Observers for Highway Home and School Safety (NACOHHSS) is founded for several purposes, observation, education, training, advising and action in the areas of highway, home and school safety.

and Safety PIINS is:

NACOHHSS and SAFETY PIINS are national organizations founded in 2001 to assist citizens, organizations and governments in recognizing safety concerns and assisting in the reduction and elimination of such hazards. This organization of advisory members involves themselves in being interested in highway, home and school safety. These two offer advice and training and education in the above areas with programs and seminars facilitated by experts.

Once again proving that DC truly loves acronyms…

“Dear PoP,

I have seen these in many cities in the States and I don’t know what they are… perhaps some of your readers can help?”

Oh dang I can’t find the answer but I know we’ve discussed this before. Does anyone remember the story with these guys?

“Dear PoP,

On U St, between 14th and 15th St, NW, in front of the parking garage, there seems to be some sort of “shrine” on one of the street signs. Every few days, it looks like someone puts up some sort of decoration, or I don’t even know what, on the sign. The other day there was even some sort of walker/toilet seat contraption as part of it.

Does this ring a bell? Any idea what’s the deal?”

This is truly bizarre. Street memorials are not uncommon after a shooting or violent death. But I’ve never seen one like this before. This one seems so random I can’t tell if it’s legit or not. Normally these “shrines” spring up on the site of the killing and I don’t recall one happening recently at this location. And secondly and perhaps most importantly – the portable walker/toilet seat just makes no sense at all. I mean no disrespect but this is really strange.

Anyone know the story here?

I can’t remember if we’ve ever discussed this before but if we have I can’t remember the answer. Because the space is so small I can’t figure out what it was once used for. It’s way too small for a garbage can. Anyone have any ideas?

It’s from the 1700 block of Harvard St, NW.
