“Who is Responsible for Tree Roots Clogging Sewer Line?”

“Dear PoPville,

Last weekend our showers, etc backed up. The plumber was only able to clear the sewer line to the street by using a larger-than-usual snake. See the picture of the tree root that was pulled out. The tree is between the street and the public sidewalk. The tree root is under the public sidewalk. Is the city responsible for fixing this? If yes, who do I contact? What experiences have people had in this type of issue.”

Ed. Note: I am dealing with almost exactly the same issue and believe I need to contact DC Water. Has anyone else gone through this situation?

“NPS approves DC Water’s Soapstone Valley Park Sewer Rehabilitation Project”

From DC Water:

“The National Park Service (NPS) has completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) and approved DC Water’s proposed Soapstone Valley Park Sewer Rehabilitation Project. Soapstone Valley Park is managed by Rock Creek Park and is located southeast of the intersection of Connecticut Avenue NW and Albemarle Street NW, extending to Broad Branch Road NW.

DC Water has determined that the Soapstone Valley Park sanitary sewer system has exceeded its design life and is in need of rehabilitation. Through this project, DC Water will rehabilitate aging sewer infrastructure within Soapstone Valley Park while limiting disturbances to park resources.

The EA described a No Action Alternative and a Trenchless Alternative (DC Water’s Preferred Alternative) for the proposed project and identified and evaluated the impacts on natural and historic resources from implementing these alternatives. The NPS has selected the Trenchless Alternative for the project.

Life Must Goes On Volume 72 “Annual Spring Cleaning for Water Pipes Begins Monday March 30”!!

From DC Water:

“The District of Columbia, Arlington County and the northeastern Fairfax County will clean out their tap water network starting Monday–a safe, annual process.

Service continues uninterrupted during the process, which runs from March 30 through May 4. During that time, drinking water in the may taste slightly different. But the purification process remains unchanged and the water is essentially unchanged. (more…)

Huge Water Main Break in Woodley Park/Cleveland Park over the weekend

Thanks to all who reported on Saturday. Meyer wrote: “Around 9am this morning, driving up Woodley Rd and passing Reno, we came upon an incredible outpouring of dirty brown water. A water main had just broken, between Reno and 35th, and water was forcing its way up through a manhole and even the roadway itself, where the street had buckled in two places. DC fire arrived on the scene a few minutes later and WASA was en route.”

On Sunday morning Alert DC reported: “DC Water reports the emergency repairs have been completed and water has been restored to the affected customers outage in the 3200-3400 blocks of Woodley Road NW and the 3100-3200 blocks of 33rd Place NW.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was wondering whether anyone has had success applying for DC Water’s LPRAP – Lead Pipe Replacement Assistance Program – which went into effect in October?  I submitted paperwork back in mid-October but it seems to have gone into a black hole.  If folks have had their application successfully submitted can they provide the name of the contractor they used and how much the whole project cost?  The name of the contractor is particularly useful because the process does require a certain amount of paperwork on their end as well, which is not something every contractor is willing to do.”
