Republic Gardens sits in a prime location at 1355 U St, NW but has been closed for many months. I was excited to see the front door open last Friday. We last spoke about the space back in March ’08 when it had plans to reopen after dealing with back rent issues. Not sure what the story on U4ria is – when I walked inside, there was a tv on but nobody to be found.

Anyone hear anything about u4ria?

If you’re in the industry – they’re hiring:

Note that the building still seems to be for sale/lease:

We talk a lot about crimes in our neighborhoods, when warranted I’d also like to highlight some good police work.

From MPD Friday night:

Around 10:30 last night, Third District Officers received a call from a citizen advising that a young male was breaking into cars in the 1300 block of W street. The officers arrived in the area and stopped a person matching the caller’s description. After further investigation, the officers found 2 separate cars that were broken into as well as had property stolen out of them. Recovered from the person stopped was property matching the description of the items taken from the vehicles as well as a 9mm handgun from the subject. The male was placed under arrest.

The subject arrested is described as:

Black male approximately 15 years of age, 5’8, 120 lbs, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, riding a red and silver bike.

Anyone with information relating to this event, or persons in that area that match this description are encouraged to call 202-727-9099. Thanks again to the citizen that called and alerted our officers to this individual, together we have taken another gun off the street…….

Cleveland Park Wine & Spirits 3423 Conn Ave NW

In the realm of cool DC neighborhoods, Cleveland Park is fast becoming my favorite–and as a loyal U Street lover, that’s saying something. Cleveland Park is chock full of great restaurants (Dino, Ardeo+Bardeo, Palena…), great shopping (Carbon is incredible), and as I’ve recently discovered–this neighborhood is home to one of our city’s best wine selections at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits.

The shop, which has been open for two decades, is big, bright, and wonderfully open. I love cute little tiny wine shops, but the wide open aisles and high oak shelves of Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits are a breath of fresh air. With all that space, the wine lovers are free to step back and ogle the incredible selection of wines from all over the world.

While this shop does have a great deal of labels you’ll likely recognize, they also have a great deal of unique wines. Within moments of entering the Bordeaux section of their wine shop, Tony Quinn approached me–we began talking about the Zweigelt I’d chosen already and he informed me that they have wines from Austria, Georgia, Urgugay, and Colorado (who knew they were making wine in Colorado?!)–and everywhere else, for that matter.

After exploring a bit, Tony allowed me to taste two Rhone blends though I ended up coming home with a 2005 Saint Emilion, a Cremant de Loire Rose, and a Zweigelt. The price range is comfortable to say the least–I took home three bottles for under $60 (before the bag tax–that’s what I get for leaving my green bags at home).

This upcoming weekend, like most weekends, Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits will host two free tasting events. On Friday, March 18th from 5-8pm the shop will hold a tasting of the entire XYZin portfolio. On Saturday, March 19th, Regis from Roanoake Vineyards will be in the shop tasting Virginia wines!

Recommendation after the jump. (more…)

From MPD:

A few minutes past midnight [Saturday], in the area of Sherman and Barry, there was apparently a dispute that took place between 2 large groups of people. Moments later, someone started shooting at a few of the participants in the dispute. An adult male was shot in the wrist area and was transported to a local hospital. Subsequently, a weapon was recovered from the area. Anyone that has any knowledge of this or the events that led to this around Georgia and Barry, Sherman and Barry .etc, are encouraged to call 202-727-9099

I found this awesome flower in a mud patch near Van Ness. Anyone know what type it is?

And the one below from Mt. Pleasant was pretty brilliant as well:

And it sounds freaking awesome. Back in Jan. we learned that the owners of Equinox will be opening a new restaurant, Watershed, in NoMa (in the Hilton Garden Inn) in April 2011.

You can now see their menu here. It sounds awesome. I’ll be eager to hear what folks think of the “Rappahannock River Oyster Po’ Boy with Butter Lettuce, Shaved Onion and Tomato Remoulade, Artisan Baguette”. What sounds best on the menu to you? Is it April yet…?

“You all need to know school really is, and why kids be dropping out and stuff. People need to know that because them grown-ups don’t get it. They just be like, ‘You should go to school and be somebody.’ Come on now, it is not that simple. If you are put in a place that is not a learning environments, why should you learn anything? You just gonna follow the click. Just because you call it a school don’t mean that people be learning, especially when most of the teachers don’t believe in their students.

“I do my work and all, but school is boring. I used to go to a charter school, and they took us on field trips and gave us activities. People had school spirit and cared about something. Now, I go to public school and we got none of that. I try to do my best, but I be seeing people drop out everyday because they stop caring. They think that school is boring and it don’t prepare them for nothing. They probably right.

“Even if people here don’t be believing in us, my mother and my brothers believe in me. They don’t want me to be no bum. They are encouraging me to graduate and be the best that I can be. I want to go to college and study journalism. I like to write, but it gotta be about something interesting. I want to tell the stories that people actually want to know about in this city. There are a lot of crazy things that happen here. Just look at the schools. I want people to know that we have no diversity in our schools. I spend my life around black people. The only caucasian people I know are teachers. I wish that would change. I want to get on TV and tell stories that will help change our schools and stop all them kids from dropping out.”

Back in Dec. we learned that Fast Gourmet had the best sandwiches in town. And nearly everyone agreed. They are certainly the best sandwiches you’ll ever see in a gas station and possibly in a ll of DC. So this is surely going to be good news. I spoke with one of the owners earlier this week saying I heard some scuttlebutt about opening more locations and she said it was true! They will first ensure that the 14th and W, St NW location remains a success and then in the next year or so will look to open 2nd and possibly 3rd locations in Dupont Circle and Georgetown. After that (and I’ll personally be lobbying big time for the Green Line) they will be looking at other neighborhoods.

Nice.
