First Friday:

International Arts And Artists
9 Hillyer Court Northwest
Friday, June 1st, 2012
6:00pm – 9:00pm | $5 Suggested Donation

First Friday openings are a collaborative effort to strengthen arts and culture in the beautiful, multi-cultural neighborhood of Dupont Circle. On the first Friday of every month, galleries in our neighborhood host simultaneous openings for art enthusiasts from all walks of life. We encourage all to join us for our openings and to circulate between our neighboring galleries, which host an ever-changing array of styles and media.

At Hillyer Art Space First Fridays you will find a diverse cross-section of DCs artistic milieu, with an audience comprised of all ages that is representative of the multi-cultural neighborhood in which we are situated. Our First Fridays are always complimented by a special musical element, provided either by a DJ or live musician to enhance the ambience. First Fridays is the best way to end the week and kickoff a great weekend!

Listed District offers daily DC Craigslist findings of everything from Mid-Century and Industrial furniture, to bikes and the utterly strange.  Every week Ellen is going to share a roundup of some Phenomenal Finds with PoPville.

Welcome to another one of those fridays that don’t involve a theme – there were just too many random, wonderful things available!

I’m writing this post from my hometown in Alabama, I’ve come home for a family picnic to be held on our farm in rural south Tennessee. Our family has been on this farm, which at its peak of operation boasted 1400 acres, for over 100 years. Tomorrow’s picnic will be nothing short of epic, a gathering of the last generation (my grandfather and his siblings/cousins) to actually live as a family on the farm during traditional operation. My cousins estimate that at least 100 relatives will gather on the site of the old “Homeplace,” long ago destroyed by a tornado, to share the oral history of The Farm and take tours led by those who know The Farm best.

Few people can point to an exact location on a map with such pride, a point from which they can trace their origins – a place that they are still welcome to visit whenever they want. I’ve always known that this sense of place attributed to my love of history and “old stuff” – I’m in love with the stories that I’ll never know, the mysterious origins of an object that are lost forever. Tomorrow at The Farm, I’ll remember my own origins – and perhaps come back with a few of those forgotten stories.

Finds after the jump. (more…)
