Hacienda (live):

DC9
1940 9th Street Northwest
Wednesday, September 5th, 2012
8:30pm – 11:30pm

There is something to get excited about in south-central Texas. In fact the buzz surrounding San Antonio’s Hacienda may signal a rebirth of young rock n’ roll -with emphasis on the “roll”- to the country’s landscape. Formed by cousins Abraham Villanueva (piano/vocals) and Dante Schwebel (guitar/vocals), together with Abraham’s brothers Jaime (drums/vocals) and Rene Villanueva (bass/vocals), this Mexican-American quartet blends a raw yet sophisticated style of pop music with harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles and Beach Boys. As fate would have it, a demo of 6 songs landed in the hands of Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, and the band’s life was forever changed. Soon after they were opening for The Black Keys in Austin Texas, as well as for Dr. Dog, gaining some much needed exposure. Under Auerbach’s watch, Hacienda would write and arrange more than twenty songs, sending him demos periodically in preparation for their debut album, ultimately recording in Dan’s own studio in Akron, Ohio.

Ellen Richardson, a graphic designer and Pleasant Plains resident, recently took her Craigslist hunting skills to the next level with the launch of her blog, Listed District. Listed District offers daily DC Craigslist findings of everything from Mid-Century and Industrial furniture, to bikes and the utterly strange.  Every week Ellen is going to share a roundup of some Phenomenal Finds with PoPville.

If there’s one thing thing that I am in danger of having too much of, it’s vintage seating. When searching for the perfect barstools for our island, I was seeing so many single, unique stools that I finally gave up on the idea that they should all match. And, besides that, four matching barstools (that aren’t hideous) are next to impossible to find on CL! We now have an Emeco stool, a Toledo stool, and a vintage swiveling dentist’s chair all lined up neatly at the bar – and I’m still searching for that perfect fourth addition. The mismatched set always makes for a great story, and each of our friends has their favorite stool which they claim at every visit.

Perhaps today’s Listed District finds will help you get started on your mismatched seating collection. Happy Hunting!

$20 – 1960s Student Desk Chair (very cool arms)
$30 – Ornate Carved Bar Stool (is that a kitten carved on the back??)

$60 – Pair Vintage Aqua Metal Bouncers
$125 – Eames Modernica Stool

From a press release:

Could be pretty interesting

The Humanities Council of Washington, D.C. (HCWDC) is pleased to bring back its think and drink program, HUMANITINI ™. The series will be held on Thursdays at Tabaq Bar and Bistro on the 13th and 27th and Jackie Lee’s, The Lounge Uptown on the 20th of September, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The Humanitini is our after-work, think and drink program that encourages citizens to examine social and contemporary issues that impact their lives. This series of Humanitini programs will focus on the complex topic of gentrification. The Council has assembled thought leaders and newsmakers who will engage the public in open and honest dialogues on gentrification.

Each installment will examine one or more of the following topics: polarization among natives and newcomers, affordable housing, quality schools/education, public policy, and Community/Economic Development. We will discuss how the life of a city is preserved, how it inevitably changes, and ultimately what that means for residents.
