Victory to Change (2012, 30 min), by Gregory Walsh and Laurel Gwizdak – tells the story of two remarkable Indian activists, Varsha and Mukesh, who fight for the most marginalized members of Indian society – Dalits (untouchables), women, and children – encouraging them to stand up against the injustices they have faced for centuries.

After our screening, we’ll have a discussion with filmmaker Gregory Walsh and a Q&A with activist Varsha Jawalkgekar via Skype from Bihar, India.

Reminder about the free taxi rides tonight:

Together with the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) SoberRide initiative, AT&T is proud to provide free taxi rides (up to $30) to anyone 21 and over in greater Washington, DC who may be a little stir crazy following Sandy and celebrated Halloween a little too hard.

From 10pm until 6am this Wednesday night, AT&T customers can call #WRAP to get a safe, free ride home, while others can dial 800-200-TAXI. Please note: this is a change from past SoberRide programs.

WRAP’s SoberRide provides greater Washington, DC residents a safe way home on high-risk holidays, including the December/January holiday season, St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day and Halloween.

Bar Pilar is hosting a “Thriller” Halloween, encouraging everyone to dress up like the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson. They’ll be slinging $7 Halloween cocktails like the Graveyard Punch and Pumpkin Manhattan made with house pumpkin-infused Old Overholt Rye, for anyone in a costume. They’ll also play Michael Jackson hits and other pop tunes, with fog machines to re-create the ‘Thriller’ atmosphere. And the best MJ-inspired costume wins a $50 bar tab, with judging at 11pm.

The Center for Persian Classical Music (CPCM) is a training institution for the Iranian traditional and folk music. In addition to teaching music, the Center addresses a wide spectrum of the norms, traditions, customs, and values of the Iranian culture. CPCM devotes its activities to performing concerts, publishing books, producing musical audios and videos, newsletters, art exhibitions, and Persian handicrafts.

CPCM is managed and run by Nader Majd. Born in Iran in 1944, Nader is an Iranian musician and scholar. He has been studying and performing music since his childhood. He learned music, both theory and practice, from his father and uncles who were dedicated musicians. Nader specializes in playing and teaching the Tar, Setar, Santur, Violin and Vocal. He has participated in many concerts and TV shows in Iran and abroad, produced a number of audio and video tapes, and taught music in the USA for the past ten years.
