A reader sends from the Washington Post:

When bus drivers don’t have access to restrooms while on duty, they often have no choice but to go on the bus, a top transit union leader told the National Transportation Safety Board on Wednesday.

“Urinating on a bus is something we deal with on a regular basis,” said James Madaras, chief safety officer at Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689, which represents most Metro train and bus operators.

Update, 7 p.m.:

A Metro spokeswoman said Metrobus drivers have access to restroom facilities on “virtually every trip,” noting that more than 90 percent of Metrobus routes serve a Metro station where an employee restroom is available.

“Dear PoPville,

On Saturday night my daughter was over at my home in Petworth, and at 10pm she decided to go back to her place near Foggy Bottom. We tried to get at Uber but there was surge pricing and long wait because of the rain. Instead, I drove her to the Fort Totten metro station because there is always a line of cabs there. I asked the first driver in line to take her to Foggy Bottom and he refused because he said it was too far and he would never get a fare back. Then I went to the next driver, who refused, and so on for five more cabs. Two other guys were also turned down by the same drivers because of their destination.

I ended up driving her to Union Station where she caught a cab. But I was really angry. Is that legal to turn down a trip within the city?”

From WMATA:

“Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of June 19-21 with service adjustments on all 6 rail lines beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday. On the Red Line during daytime hours, five stations from Shady Grove to Grosvenor have service every 12 minutes, rather than every 6 minutes.

Due to scheduled rebuilding, Orange, Silver, Blue, Yellow and Green line trains will operate every 20 minutes, rather than every 12-15 minutes.”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Earlier today, the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) released a Safety Management Inspection Report on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). In response to the report, Mayor Muriel Bowser released the following statement:

“The FTA’s safety audit confirms my belief that WMATA is in need of a management restructuring and organizational turn-around. I will continue to work with the District’s appointees to the Board of Directors and our regional partners to demand accountability.”
