Update from WMATA:

Metro is mourning the loss of a heroic employee, Robert Cunningham, who intervened on behalf of a customer today at Potomac Avenue Station and was a victim of senseless gun violence. Mr. Cunningham was 64 years old and a mechanic in our power department. In his remembrance, Metro has lowered its flags to half-staff during this time of grief. “Dear PoPville,

I wanted to share a frustrating issue I encountered with the new SmartTrip system since they switched over last year. I lost my wallet last week so I bought a new SmarTrip card, registered it online, transferred my funds from my old card, and even topped it up with more funds and set up automatic refill, all online. Apparently, none of that actually gets sent to your new card until you tap your card at the same metro station at least 24 hours apart so it can “localize” (whatever that means). (more…)

“Metro announced today that beginning Feb.7, customers on the Blue, Blue + (Yellow Line replacement) and Orange lines will see trains every 12 minutes from 6 – 9 a.m. and 3 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday. Beginning Feb. 21, Red Line customers will see trains departing every 8 minutes all day until 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday. (more…)

Metro Transit Police reported Monday night:

“MTPD on scene of shooting in bus bay at Congress Heights Stn occurred ~10:11 pm. 2 shot – 14-yo male non-life threatening injury & 17-yo male transported w/critical injuries pronounced deceased at hospital. Investigation ongoing. MPD will take lead as it is now a homicide.”

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Monday, January 2, 2023, in the 1200 block of Alabama Avenue, Southeast.

At approximately 10:10 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, the members located two juvenile male victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victims to area hospitals. After all life-saving efforts failed, one of the victims was pronounced dead. The second victim is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The decedent has been identified as 17-year-old Martez Toney, of Southeast, DC. (more…)

“A Metro data center is seeing firsthand effects of weather-related issues due to multiple days of frigid temperatures, causing sporadic outages of busETA and rail arrival information. Metro leaders were alerted late on Dec.24, that pipes in the building burst, threatening to damage network equipment that remains housed at the agency’s former headquarters.

To address standing water and mitigate damage in the building, a partial shutdown of power is required. (more…)
