In anticipation of the post-Thanksgiving, pre-New Year’s fitness resolution season, SWEAT DC is offering free classes to those curious about the northwest DC boutique fitness studio that offers challenging 45-minute classes in what owner Gerard “Coach G” Burley calls “a fun nightclub setting.”

A pass for two weeks of free workouts for first-time “SWEAT Stars” (as clients are more affectionately known by Coach G & the SWEAT community) is now available for a limited time on the SWEAT DC website here.

“SWEAT DC combines the best workout with the best party,” Burley said of the high-intensity group fitness program offered at the Georgia Avenue studio.

The lights of the neon-accented studio are kept low, the better to show off the graffiti murals and the glow-in-the-dark weights. The darkened studio, Burley said, also “provides a space where no one is judging you.”

And while the lights may be low, the energy is kept high by the enthusiastic fitness professionals who coach members through each program and the lively non-stop music that keeps SWEAT Stars moving.

But just as important as the health benefits is the inclusive, supportive and empowering community that has developed among the SWEAT DC membership. In fact, the boutique studio began four years ago as a fundraising pop-up boot camp to help Burley’s local LGBT basketball league.

“Growing up an overweight, closeted gay black boy in Baltimore, I struggled with many issues in my youth and turned to food for comfort,” Burley said. After losing his mother after graduating high school, “I turned to fitness as my sanctuary to build my confidence and take control of my life. I was inspired to open SWEAT DC to create a results-driven fitness program that builds people up from the inside out.” (Learn what “Coach G” eats these days.)

This column is written by Marcus Correll, the Marketing Coordinator at RLAH Real Estate. He is not a licensed agent, nor intends to be portrayed as such, but he is entrenched in the industry helping approximately 200 agents with their marketing.

Every year I hear the friendly debates in our offices amongst the agents and sometimes with their clients on whether the holidays are a good time to list a property.

After some research, I found that there are dozens of articles conflicting with each other to best serve their own sales and brokerage interests. While we won’t try to sway you one way or the other, we thought we’d share the pros and cons along with some tips should you decide that now is the best time for you to list.

Cons of Listing Your Home During the Holidays:

  • Many people out of town or focused on holidays
  • Winter is cold and dark, meaning nighttime showings and lack of landscape appeal
  • Those “Holiday” days/weekends add on to the property’s “days on market”
  • Making time/keeping home clean for showings is difficult if you’re hosting gatherings
  • The different parties involved to facilitate a real estate transaction can be “out of office”
  • Animals growing in their winter coats are more likely to shed
  • Boxes of presents, wrapping paper and other gift items are often hard to hide
  • Contractors and condo boards could be difficult to reach for questions
  • Some buyers biases and prejudices could infringe on their decision with overly religious decorations

Eastern Market Main Street kicks off its Holly Days season on Saturday, November 24 — also known as Small Business Saturday.

On that day, over 30 of the businesses inside the Capitol Hill historic corridor will begin celebrating the holidays with promotions intended to foster local shopping and encourage investment in the local economy.

Eastern Market Main Street will be set up outside the Eastern Market Metro station on Nov. 24, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The first 200 shoppers to visit will receive a Small Business Saturday goody bag and free hot chocolate will be available throughout the event.

“We hope that by highlighting the variety and unique aspects of our own corridor, we will increase awareness of the importance of investing in your local economy and provide tangible support to our amazing businesses that extends beyond the holiday season,” said Madeleine Odendahl, executive director of EMMS.

The Holly Days is a 37-day extravaganza of events, festivities, restaurant specials and merchandise sales. Shops will be decorated with wreaths and garland, accenting the singular mix of the historic with the modern that makes the neighborhood uniquely distinctive.

The Holly Days celebration continues until December 31. If time is running out on your holiday shopping, get some ideas at the The Holly Days Last Minute Gift Guide.
