“Stand with Ukraine: Day of Solidarity” on Sunday

“United Help Ukraine calling U.S. supporters of Ukraine: More than 300 supporters and friends of Ukraine from across the U.S. will gather at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. to honor fallen Ukrainian heroes during the 2013-14 Revolution of Dignity and the thousands of fallen heroes of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Following the vigil will be a rally and a peaceful march to the White House held in unison with members of the Belarusian, Georgian, Kazakh, and Baltic communities. The objectives of this event are to demand an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine and the occupation of Crimea along with other territories in Donbas, eastern Ukraine — as well as the release of all Ukrainian citizens unjustly imprisoned by Russia, including Crimean Tatars.

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today condemned Representative Andrew Clyde’s (R-GA) attacks on the District of Columbia today, including his statements that he is “actively working” on a bill to repeal the D.C. Home Rule Act and that D.C. has been a “reign of terror” since passage of the Home Rule Act in 1973. Clyde, who is a member of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, which has jurisdiction over D.C., is contemplating action and using rhetoric not seen with respect to D.C. from Republicans since the early and mid-1990s.

“Representative Clyde literally wants the federal government to resume running D.C. as a colony,” Norton said. “He wants to take away the limited self-government the nearly 700,000 D.C. residents, a majority of whom are minorities, have had for the last 50 years and give absolute power over D.C. to Congress and, presumably, to congressionally or presidentially appointed administrators. At a time when we are having unprecedented success on our D.C. statehood bill, we will continue to move forward, not go back. We will defeat his anti-democratic efforts.” (more…)

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced the victories she secured in the Senate’s fiscal year (FY) 2022 District of Columbia Appropriations bill, which was released today. The bill includes three of Norton’s top priorities: $40 million for the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program (DCTAG); increases in the DCTAG annual and lifetime awards; and removal of the two enacted FY 2021 riders, which prohibit D.C. from spending its local funds on abortions for low-income women and on recreational marijuana commercialization. “By Order of DC Council, DC Circulator Fares to Be Reinstated Effective October 1”

“Today, by order of the DC Council, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced that the fares on the DC Circulator will be reinstated effective October 1, 2021.

On March 2020, in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19), Mayor Muriel Bowser announced all DC Circulator fares were suspended through the public health emergency that ended on July 25. After positive feedback from District residents, the Mayor announced her extension of fare suspension on DC Circulator through September 30.

The Mayor’s FY 2022 budget proposal set aside $6.5 million in funding for free DC Circulator service. After deliberation, the Council rejected the zero-fare policy funding, requiring DDOT to reinstate the one-dollar fare on October 1, the beginning of FY 2021. (more…)
