“Dear PoPville,

Around 1 am this morning, my friends and I spotted a really cute medium sized black dog wandering around with no collar at 11th and Park Rd NW. Our best guess was that it is a Portugese Water Dog, since it closely resembled First Dog Bo (“Faux Bo”?). He had one white leg and other white marks on his belly, and looked like he had been well-groomed until recently. I did not take a picture. He was non-aggressive to us as we tried to coax him over, and knew how to “sit”, but was very skittish and wouldn’t let us come close for more than a second. The worst part was he kept running into the street.

After requests to a 24 hour veterinary clinic and the Humane Society, who were both unable to help with a stray at that hour, we flagged down a police cruiser. The officers were very helpful and were able to coax the dog into the enclosed dog run at 11th and Park NW, at which point they called animal control to come collect him.

“Faux Bo” seemed like such a sweetheart and could use some help to find his way home! If you have any information about a dog matching this description, or, if it turns out to be an abuse/abandonment case and you would be interested in pursuing adoption, please contact DC Animal Services (202) 576-6664 or the Washington Humane Society (202) 234-8626.”

“Dear PoPville,

Recently I was approached on the street by young men presumably selling dogs, one near Capitol Hill and on the same day near Logan Circle. One even stood on the corner subtly advertising with a very cute puppy in his hand. I’m not a dog person, so I don’t know the breed, but this definitely was no street mutt. It was very clean and very well groomed. Even the pitch of the two guys was similar (something odd like “You need a dog?”) I initially thought “dog” might have been street code language for some new drug, but the first guy persisted and explained that, yes, he meant pet dogs. Just wondering if other have been approached. Perhaps it’s just an innocent hustle and a coincidence that two guys approached me on the same day… or is there some kind of dog selling ring in DC now?”

“Dear PoPville,

I understand why people get angry when dog owners don’t clean up after their dogs. I am a dog owner and it makes me furious to see lazy people who are breaking the law. I have plastic bags stuffed in about every pocket just in case I need them.

But there also appears to be an attitude that private parties (residential and commercial) have the right to prohibit perfectly legal canine behavior in public tree boxes. I appreciate the effort to keep the tree boxes tidy but if one plants flowers and shrubbery on public property including tree boxes, they cannot expect these plants to be treated as private property. These signs are the most extreme response I have seen yet to try to try to dictate what dogs can do on public property, however, I see less permanent versions of these signs all over town.

The way I see it, if the police have an issue with it, they can issue me a fine. If you are not an officer of the law then don’t tell me what to do on public property.

On the other hand, there are specific things that are prohibited or required by law related to tree boxes according to the DDOT Public Realm Design Manual:

· Be planted a minimum of 2 feet from the root flare (crown) of the street tree in order to protect feeder and anchor roots from damage
· Wickets and other tripping hazards are strictly prohibited
· The growing of vegetables in a tree box area is prohibited
· Include plants that have a shallow root system and that grow less than 18 inches in height

I have seen many tree boxes in violation of these rules, often while sporting a ‘no dogs’ sign as well.

PS I maintain a treebox in front of my home but I use low, easily replaceable grasses and mulch rather than create a private garden.”

“Dear PoPville,

A female golden lab was found in Columbia Heights tonight around Kenyon and Lamont. She was clearly lost (running in the street then hiding under cars) and the Washington Humane took her back to their shelter at 9pm tonight. She is very sweet and clearly someone’s pet. She has a pink collar on (see photo) but no tags.

The dog will be held at the Georgia Avenue Adoption Center at 7319 Georgia Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20012. They can be reached at 202-723-5730”

UPDATE:

Porter is still lost! Substantial REWARD for information leading to his safe return. Please help us find him! He is small (15lbs), red and white coat, looks like a mini husky or fox, 1 blue eye, one part blue part amber eye. On July 1, he ran out of 4403 2nd St. NE in the Brookland neighborhood. He was not wearing his collar at the time, and my friend no longer lives at that location. He has been reported seen near the metro tracks and construction areas close to the Brookland/CUA metro and Catholic University. According to the latest sighting (2 weeks ago on July 23rd), he was seen back in the neighborhood where he was lost, close to Webster St. NE and 1st St. NE, in an alley. It is also possible that someone has taken him in. If you see him, PLEASE do all of the following:

1. DO NOT CALL OUT, APPROACH, or CHASE him!! He is very skittish, and will bolt. I want him to feel safe and stay in the area. If he is with a person, please get as much information as you can so that i can locate and contact the person or the police.

2. CALL ME IMMEDIATELY at 202-681-1231. I do not care what time it is.

3. PLEASE KEEP HIM IN YOUR SIGHTS and FOLLOW HIM until I get there! I will compensate you for your time and effort.

4. TAKE A PICTURE of him and remember as many details as you can (precise location and direction he was headed, description of who he was with, if anyone or any other animal, condition- is he limping, does he look hurt, etc)

See www.facebook.com/findporterdc for more information. Thank you to everyone for all and any help. Please help me bring him home.

From Washington Humane Society:

On Thursday, June 27, 2013 the Washington Humane Society (WHS) was alerted to the claim that someone was alleged to be leaving poisoned dog treats in the Logan Circle area of Washington, DC.

“After a thorough investigation by our Humane Law Enforcement division, we cannot substantiate the claim that there is anyone out there intentionally attempting to harm pets,” Scott Giacoppo, WHS VP of External Affairs reports, adding, “Our investigation has revealed that one dog has been reported sick from the consumption of an unknown toxin. After a thorough investigation, which included outreach to every veterinary clinic in the District, we have received no evidence to indicate that this was intentional, happened in a public space or that there may be a threat to animal safety.”

Humane Law Enforcement Officers have been in contact with the owner of the dog who has gotten sick. Based on his limited cooperation, and the lack of direct evidence to support the claim, WHS has decided to close the investigation. Humane Law Enforcement will re-open the case if and when additional evidence is discovered.

WHS maintains that pet owners should always be cautious of potentially hazardous materials when walking pets in public areas. Dr. Megan McAndrew, WHS Medical Director, advises that you bring your pet to a veterinarian immediately if you notice signs of nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, rapid or difficult breathing, or pale, dark or blue gums within 12 hours after your pet may have eaten an unknown substance.

Despite the popularity of Ernie the Flying Dog, Romo from Adams Morgan is the most photographed dog to appear on the site. I was very upset to read the following post from the forum:

Adams Morgan Dog Romo Dead?

Hey guys! I live in Adams Morgan and love seeing the big white dog, whose name is apparently Romo, hanging out his window on Calvert people watching in the summertime. I haven’t seen him recently, though, and noticed his owners put a plaque outside their window that says his name, Romo. I wonder if he passed away? That would be terribly sad!

Upon investigation I am happy to report Romo is alive and well! I stopped by yesterday and could see him looking out the window:

romo_alive

He just got a nice new name plate. So now when you walk by Calvert Street and see a big dog relaxing by/out the window – you can say – what’s up Romo?

pill pockets

A reader forwards the following email:

Sorry for the mass email here, but I just received a message from one of our clients in the Logan Circle area, alerting us to the fact that someone is dropping contaminated “Pill Pockets” (these are a malleable beef flavored treats that one uses to envelope medicine for dogs and cats) stuffed with some sort of poison, on the grounds of Logan Circle. Because the Pill Pockets smell like a meaty flavored treat, the dogs have been devouring them, causing them to get sick, and sadly one dog died from the yet to be identified toxin. (I am doing more research to follow up on this thread to see what additional information may be coming in on the subject.) I’ve attached an image of the cat version of Pill Pockets, so you can see what they look like. The dog version are the same basic idea, only a little larger.

I wanted to forward this info ASAP to all of our staff members and clients, even beyond the Logan Circle neighborhood, as I heard about this happening in two different areas of Northern Virginia last year. Scary stuff!

Please be careful out there, and keep an eye out for any suspicious treats, food, etc., on the ground in various locations that allow dogs! I will follow up with any additional details that may surface, and please keep us posted if you hear of anything, as well. I am going to contact the folks at the Humane Society now, and ask to whom we should report any accounts that may arise. Be safe!

“Dear PoPville,

Amos is a brown lab mix with a mostly brown coat and white on his chest. He’s about 60 lbs and has a red collar with a rabies tag and a tag with his name and my phone number.

Last seen June 27 around 8:00 pm on Buchanan St NW between Georgia and 9th. He’s friendly but won’t typically let strangers too close. If you see him please call day or night 850-509-0132.”
